From the Inside Flap

Research indicates that virtually no one actually reads prefaces in computer books. In fact, this preface could be about the Loch Ness Monster for all most readers care. But why don't people read prefaces? Is it because prefaces sometimes get too personal? ("..and I want to thank Sal, who made this book possible.") Is it because the sentiments of nerdy authors can be a bit repulsive? ("..Sal, my MicroVAX, was always there when I needed her.") Is it because they are predictably self-deprecatory in an ironic way? ("..and I want to thank: list of 250 noted experts goes here for reviewing drafts of this manual. Naturally all mistakes are my own.") No, when it comes right down to it, people avoid prefaces because they're boring. It is also de rigueur for the nerdish author to explain, folksinger style, why he or she decided to write this piece. I guess this book sort of came to me while I was camping out in the glorious Rocky Mountains. I was gazing at pristine waterfalls and awe-inspiring sunsets when I said to myself, "This land must be preserved. I shall write a KornShell book." Possessed by a demonic ecological fervor, I roared down that mountain in a snowmobile, fired up a 1200 watt workstation, and wrote it all down for you. I only ask that you use the power of the KornShell for good, rather than evil. Actually, I've been writing programming manuals for many years under the pen name "Apollo Computer Inc." Recently, my agent insisted that I change it to "Hewlett-Packard Company," presumably because it sounded less ethnic. Through the years, I've been lucky enough to get lots of feedback from my readers. What do you think they ask for? More text? No. More syntax? Definitely not. When it comes right down to it, readers consistently ask for only one thing: more examples. So, I listened to them and based this tutorial entirely on examples. I feel that short, focused examples are more valuable than long, detailed examples, and I've written the book accordingly. The purpose of the book is not to make me look clever; it is to make you look clever. Nevertheless, I've sprinkled a few lengthy examples into the mix for those of you who enjoy that sort of thing. When I was a mere lad my family doctor pointed to a massive encyclopedia of pharmaceuticals and told me that he could treat 90% of all patients with only six different medicines. Similarly, although the KornShell is a very rich language, my goal is to focus on the common script ailments and to leave the beriberi treatment to specialists. Beginners may be wondering, " Is this book too hard for me?" No, probably not. Programmers experienced in various languages, though not in the KornShell, are probably wondering, "Is this book too wimpy for me?" No, probably not. To help guide both kinds of readers through the book, I've marked certain sections as being more appropriate for one group or the other. Beginners don't need an explanation of traps and experienced programmers already know what loops are. Here's how I've organized the book: Chapter 1 introduces the KornShell and its features.Chapter 2 contains some simple KornShell scripts to get you started.Chapter 3 discusses data types.Chapter 4 shows you how to do simple math.Chapter 5 illustrates pattern matching.Chapter 6 explains how to evaluate conditions.Chapter 7 shows you how to set up loops.Chapter 8 describes how to create simple menus.Chapter 9 explains how to evaluate command line arguments.Chapter 10 illustrates functions.Chapter 11 has a lot of conceptual stuff in it about environments and inheritance. It also contains some sample start-up scripts.Chapter 12 examines input and output.Chapter 13 focuses on string manipulation.Chapter 14 describes the many variables that are part of the KornShell.Chapter 15 describes various advanced features of the KornShell. (This chapter is aimed at the sophisticated programmer.)Chapter 16 contains a half-dozen lengthy KornShell examples.Chapter 17 explains command line editing and the history file. Appendix contains a syntactic quick reference. This appendix will become more valuable to you as your KornShell experience increase. Since the KornShell runs on all sorts of operating systems, I've tried to keep operating system dependencies to a bare minimum. Nevertheless, my sense is that the majority of KornShell users are either working under the UNIX operating system or are at least marginally familiar with it. Therefore, in the examples that do contain commands, I've picked UNIX commands. It is now time for the obligatory not to the tools that made this book possible. I used the \fBtroff\fR.mm macro package to format drafts of this book (an experience akin to running blindfold through nettles) and then came to my senses and converted the whole thing to Interleaf TPS. //cascade, my trusty Apollo DN4000 workstation, was always there when I needed her. It practically goes without saying that I created camera-ready copy for the book on a Hewlett-Packard laser printer. My three primary reviewers were KornShell gurus David Korn, Steve Sommars, and Glenn Fowler, all of whom gave fantastic and diplomatic criticism. I also received important criticism and help from Tom Barstow, Dave Beckedorf, Bart Hanlon, Warren Johnson, Ed Johnston, Mark Keil, Mike Kong, Alice Lynch, Dave Penfield, Will Roaf, Frank Rubinsky, John Weiss, Daryl Winters, Teri Witham, and other people whose names I have no doubt forgotten to list. Eric Eldred and Quentin Sullivan found so many bugs in early drafts that, and I mean this as a compliment, they should have a brand of insecticide named after them. Judy Tarutz is my long-suffering editor. In person, Judy is a kind, gentle soul with an outrageous sense of humor. Give her a red pen though, and she turns into Conan the Barbarian. Her savage red pen cut a bloody swath through early drafts of this book. If we should chance to meet up one day, dear reader, I'll tell you all the "weak" jokes she made me take out. I'd also like to thank the members of the Academy. A consortium of great minds-those minds owned and operated by Ted Ricks, John Wait, Jack Danahy, and Steve Spicer-led me to the KornShell and helped me define the material for this book. Finally, I'd like to thank the person who really made this book possible: my wife and best friend, Marilyn. Whoops, almost forgot. Naturally, all mistakes are my own. 020156324XP04062001

This book is *the* way to begin working with the Korn shell. I needed to get up to speed with a shell scripting language in order to do Oracle DBA tasks. I bought this based on the strength of it's Amazon ratings and was completely delighted. The author has a great style, easy to understand and very clear. I found the procession of topics to be very logical; a nice gradual build up from the simple to the more complex. There is plenty of 'depth' in each chapter and good highlighting of potential problem areas and difficult concepts. These have additional coverage to help steer clear of the hassles and come to a clear understanding of the more challenging ideas. The examples are well thought out, they present each topic of interest clearly and in a meaningful way, without clutter. I have coded almost every single one and found only a few errors. Within a chapter the examples are presented with increasing complexity, but are never the page after page monsters that leave you lost. It is amazing how well the author illustrates the content with short (20 - 30 line) samples. When I was puzzled with something I had read here, I turned to two of my friends who 'live' in shell scripting up to their necks. Both have learned useful techniques from this book through my questions. My copy is literally starting to come apart from constant use for reference. It is that good.

Excellent "tutorial" with basic, simple, yet concise examples. I have the O'Reilly book "Korn Shell" but this one really gave clear examples and practice results. Even got into some more advanced features but in confirmed what I learned from the O'Reilly book. I definitely recommend this book to brush up or strengthen any beginner's level knowledge on shell programming/scripting in general but definitely on the most popular and powerful shell....Korn. I feel more confident in programming at the Shell level than I ever had before.

This is an awesome book! For people who think they need to either learn, brush up their shell scripting skills, look no further! THIS IS THE BOOK you NEED!! I have some experience writing small bash scripts, but not exactly good at it. Trying to be good at scripting though and my search for a book which can teach you the tricks of the trade in the simplest way possible, led me to this book. And I feel vindicated with my choice. Barry is an excellent writer + teacher. He knows how to make it interesting. I am enjoying this book and looking forward to writing some powerful scripts which get the job done!

I purchased this book in 2009. I use IBM's AIX, which still uses this version of ksh as the default shell. This book does a great job of presenting the information from the ground up. It appeals both to the novice and the experienced programmer. With the knowledge obtained from this book, I have put together a 6000 line ksh script that is used both as a personal productivity tool as well as an automated code compilation tool in a nightly cron job. Before this book I had minimal ksh programming skills (but extensive C programming skills). This is money well spent. Read it through a couple of times while working on the tool. I keep it with me as a reference. Highly recommend it and it is still relevant after all of these years.

This book was published 17 years ago (from the time of writing this comment). At the beginning I was a bit reluctant about buying this book and I was thinking maybe the book is a bit old and does not fully cover the subject. However, after reading all the 5 stars comments written by amazoncustomers and more surprisingly after seeing that everybody (without exception !!) had given 5 stars to the book, I said to myself "hey man, let's try this book". This is the first book that I used to learn Korn Shell (In fact I had found the job of my dreams which needed me to learn very fast the KornShell language, that I didn't know at all).I'm really happy about my decision. The book is really well written, witha very clear and simple language and contains loads of pertinentexamples. I highly recommend it particularly for those who are going tolearn the KornShell for the first time.It took me only one week (roughly 4 hours per day) to read and finishthis book.Try it! you won't regret it, trust me!!

No theory, no stories, the author lets you work hands on in Korn shell. The book is organized in a way that you do NOT have to read the whole book to use Korn Shell. There are practical examples that explain every little thing you might want to do with the Korn shell. This was extremely useful for me since I am a developer who has to write programs on demand and I do not have the time to read theories or stories. This book is very highly recommended!

This is absolutely the best book on Korn Shell scripting!! It has good examples along with a great index for finding solutions as you write scripts. I have 2-3 copies of this book and used to keep it with me all the time when doing work on UNIX systems for clients. Terse and direct.

This is a great KSH reference. I'd previously purchased the book new and loved the examples. I would recommend this title for anyone new to shell scripting or anyone looking for solid KSH examples.

From Booklist

Drug memoirs have long been a reliable mix of cautionary content, salacious detail, and voyeuristic thrill, and this new translation of the long-out-of-print Christiane F., first published in 1978 and something of a cult classic, delivers on every front. It follows Christiane, whose childhood in a Berlin ghetto was marked by a totally apeshit father, lack of adult supervision, and an early involvement in drugs. As a preteen Christiane was already taking a prolonged cruise through the entire pharmaceutical industry with stops at pot, quaaludes, acid, and more. At age 13, she took her first snort of heroin. From there, it was a fast slide into larceny, turning tricks, and watching her friends wither away and die. Christiane was in and out of rehab, and it was never long before she returned to the same routine: whoring, shooting up, whoring, shooting up. Though the prose is dry, the details are undeniably powerful—for example, an apartment’s stench of blood from all of the discharged needles. Repetitive and numbing, for sure, but that’s part of the point. Grades 9-12. --Kraus, Daniel

Review

“An eloquent memoir of teen drug abuse from 1970s Berlin retains a contemporary feel in a new translation. . . . Disturbing but compelling.” – Kirkus Reviews "A powerful memoir first published 35 years ago in Germany (a U.S. edition and film adaptation soon followed) shows no sign of tarnish in Cartwright’s mesmerizing and urgent new translation. The story of Christiane F., a heroin-addicted teenager living in 1970s Berlin, begins with her family’s move from the country to a fractured and confusing existence in the Berlin projects. Christiane’s bleak circumstances (her father is physically abusive, her mother permissive and absent, her teachers cold and uncaring) lead the 12-year-old to experiment with drugs. She begins with pot and alcohol—rapidly moving on to pills, acid, and finally heroin—finding excitement and intense companionship with a group of David Bowie–worshipping teenagers who populate the city’s underground club scene. Eventually, Christiane resorts to working alongside her boyfriend as a prostitute at the Bahnhof Zoo train station to support her addiction." – Publishers Weekly "Drug memoirs have long been a reliable mix of cautionary content, salacious detail, and voyeuristic thrill, and this new translation of Christiane F., first published in 1978 and something of a cult classic, delivers on every front" – Booklist“An amazing story. . . . Her story is so intriguing, and all the more so for being true. Pictures in the middle of the book helped place faces with the names, making it even better. Though definitely not for the younger crowd . . . . high school students . . . will definitely enjoy this memoir.” – School Library Journal Teen

Great book! I first saw the film Christiane F. on YouTube (with English subtitles) and really enjoyed the film for how honest it was. It was definitely difficult to watch but nevertheless it was a very well made film. It was also nice to see Bowie in it. ;) After watching the film I knew I had to read the book. I was happy to see that there was an English translation so I bought it asap. It is a VERY graphic book, perhaps more graphic than the film, and it is absolutely brutal at times, but it is a great read for any fans of the film and for those who are into 'drug stories'. I especially recommend this book to fans of the film because obviously because it's a book, it goes more in depth as to why Christiane got into drugs. She describes her relationship with her mother and her father, her childhood in Gropiustadt, her stay at NarcAnon, and of course her friends from the film, Detlef, Stella, Axel, Babsi etc. There is even some pages where her mother tells her side of the story which is heartbreaking. The film mainly touched upon her time when she first started going to The Sound and trying drugs whereas the book starts from when she is a child. Anyways, this is definitely one of my favorite books I've read so far!!

This genre is not for the faint-of-heart. It is dark, gritty and exactly waht you would imagine. It is sad because it is real and true and it happens everyday. It is even sadder because the entire situation is brought-about voluntarily, the intial scenes are all self-inflicted. The rest of addiction isn't though... So it is a timeless story, always was, and always will be true. But the creepiest thing is that it is very haunting. Snippets stick in your mind, cluttering around with really harsh details that last a very long time, emblazoned in your memory. I wish things would work out. After every re-laps I wanted Christiana to get better, you want her to get help and to stay clean. But she can't. Sadly she can't quit. She is a dope fiend forever. It is a great book to understand this position and this harsh reality. The reality is in-your-face, screaming at you, driving 90 miles an hour down a freeway, and no hears it. I really really recommend it, if you can overcome the cruel dark, monster aspect of the belly of the beast, and how humanity succumbs and feeds its addictions and vices. What an absolutely remarkable story. It is a fantastic book for this genre.

What an unbelievably sad documentary of this girl's innocence lost to Berlin's underground heroin and child prostitution scene circa 1978. Even though this story was translated from German to English, the details and prose are not lost and are plenty sufficient to get into the mind of this girl and her tragic life. One has to step away from this memoir and lay blame where it belongs. Regardless of the struggles and financial hardship of her mother, there is certainly no conceivable excuse for her allowing a 13 year old girl to wander the streets, subways and clubs of Berlin or to start sleeping with a 16 year old boyfriend in their own home. No amount of secular parenting at any level could conceive of such permissiveness, especially 35 years ago. That her mother tepidly acknowledges the error in her ways will never bring back the childhood innocence that Christiane never gets to experience. This is a harrowing account of one girl's desire to be accepted and loved and her willingness to risk anything for it. It's a disturbing read that one must be at least partially prepared for.

Got this book last week and already reading through for a second time. As a 23 year old male heroin addict whos been addicted for several years there is nothing that I've seen or read that comes close to this. Its a great read and especially the times when wed here Christianes moms side of the story it really hit close to home. I cant say it makes me motivated to get clean but my lifelong bestfriend died 3 days ago from an overdose and like Christiane I've also beat the odds while many around me died. Everyone should read this to get an idea and some insight into the addicts mind. 5 stars for both the book and movie.

Excellent book.I bought it used and it was in decent shape .story itself was better than movie , ofcourse. They always are but I am so impatient waiting for her second story to be printed in English now. It is a little close to home. Zoo station right here in my home town except I was 15 and my path started at 11 in the suburbs of a middle class neighborhood. I couldn't believe "I was reading my own thoughts and feeling ". I am writing my own book . This has giving me more inspiration.I am clean and sober now but have health issue from my unhealthy life but I have found recovery .I really hope Christiane finds Sovaldi , it's a miracle drug. If so, Maybe she will write a third book about her recovery.

Like oh my God, gag me with a spoon that dealer I copped from was like a major well you know MOFO...gag me with a spoon. Gag the translator of this latest edition of a classic drug chronicle with a spoon as well. A German fraulein growing up in postwar Berlin now comes across as a 90s American teenager on Ventura Boulevard. Fantastic and riveting read marred by an unnecessary and unauthentic new translation. Still powerful and recommended.

My 15 year old son thought the book was very shocking and depressive. He felt the book showed all the evil sides of beeing addicted to drugs and the evil that surrounds the addict and the people around them. He felt this story was a lifelesson that he will not forget.I can attest to this, I read the book at the age of 14, and I was never tempted to try any hard drugs, EVER!!!!! The book is explicit, dark and sad.

Loved the book! It's tough in content, but easy to read because it's writen in totally plain language. It descrives perfectly the Berlin of the 70s and the drug scene in a total natural way. Worth reading if you want to travel to those times.

This was a very well written trilogy. I greatly enjoyed going on this journey with Binti. I read a lot of sci-fi but these novellas felt like a completely different perspective on the genre. Binti and her story were unique and very intriguing. I loved Binti's character development as she tries to navigate peace between two waring people and peace within herself as she is changed physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally by everything she goes through. I would highly recommend these books!

Intuitive knowledge, ancestral wisdom, universal connection represented through mathematics, the diverse nature of self hood, the nature of autony, the nature of tribe, and the painful journey of living, growing, and becoming more, every day.The fact that the journey is painful and filled with tragedy does not diminish you, it enriches you, for if you somehow survive that suffering, you are that much the wiser, that much the stronger, that much *more* than you were before. Thanks to Nnedi Okarafor for reflecting back to me my intuitions about the nature of the universe, self, the power of who we are and all that makes us that way, and infinite nature of life, growth, and connection. It is a great comfort to me to know that I am not alone in these thoughts and feelings, to hear another woman feel the beat of ancestral rhythms in her blood that tell her of things long forgotten, to see another woman grasp tightly to that wisdom and find a way to do what I so long to do myself, to give thaf forgotten wisdom new life in stories that can be heard by this new world, which is reborn every day.

Love the growth shown by Binti, who comes of age on her own terms, battling tradition, tribe and family. Her coming of age is unlike any I have read before and held my interest throughout.

I'm feeling ripped off buy these short novellas. When read together the story is still incomplete. I like the character Binti, but I won't continue with this series.

This is a series that starts off really strong—enough so that I'd say the first book, Binti, is one of the most enjoyable novellas I've ever read, as well as one of my favorite adult sci-fi reads ever. While the first novella lacks a bit in world-building, it more than makes up for that absence with character development. I loved Binti as a character and really treasured her thirst for knowledge and her bravery despite all of the immense obstacles trying to hold her back from her future. Okwu, on the other hand, I had mixed feelings about at first, but quickly came to treasure as a character despite the rocky nature of their meeting. The thing about this series is that it can almost be hard to know who you want to root for, because everyone is flawed and history is muddled—which I found incredibly true-to-life for many circumstances, especially considering histories of wars and feds, so I appreciated that there were no "perfect" groups or characters in the equation.Unfortunately, I'll admit that the series did become less enjoyable for me as time went on. The second novella, Home, was still a very fun read, but it became tougher for me to reason with the lack of world-building and the random info dumps; on the other hand, though, The Night Masquerade went too far in the opposite direction and gave me too much information and history with too little action and character development.Minor complaints aside, I wholeheartedly recommend this series. It's an incredibly quick trilogy to get through, there's a gorgeous portrayal of culture and how significant cultural history and rituals can be to people—especially to individuals who have a history of being oppressed, like Binti's people, the Himba—and, if you're a fan of audiobooks, I strongly recommend Robin Miles' delivery of these stories.

Binti: Binti is the first novella in the Binti series (makes sense) and I’ve heard nothing but praise about the series for about a year now. So naturally I had to make some time and read these ones. It’s not every day you see the people of Twitter agreeing on something. If you take a moment to look up Nnedi Okorafor’s Goodreads page, you’ll see that she’s an incredibly prolific writer. It actually has one hundred and two books listed, which is crazy impressive. Some of them are novellas for the Binti series, others are standalones. All are going to get added to my TBR list, if this one novella is any indication of her writing. Also noteworthy for the novella, it won the 2015 Nebula for best novella, as well as a Hugo award. So if the praise found online hadn’t been enough to convince me that would have been. Binti is a warm and uplifting tale about space exploration, humanity as a whole, and the alien races we come across (and most importantly, how their lack of being human doesn’t mean they’re not sentient or worthy of respect). It explores the concept of home, otherness, and what it means to be part of something bigger. Binti has to be one of the more enchanting stories I’ve read this year. Her character is so full of life and passion, it’s impossible not to love her right from the start. Especially as she steps out into the unknown, completely alone and unsupported by her people. You see, Binti is the first of the Himba people to leave their desert. She’s certainly the first to leave her world. Her people don’t believe in traveling, or in trusting outsides. But she has done both of those things, and she can never take that back. She has no choice but to move forward, and move forward she does. Watching her adapt to the situations she’s in, dealing with the unexpected trials and tribulations, and most of all, find a way to keep her culture in the midst of all of it…it was breathtaking. I believe Binti is the perspective I’ve been longing to see in space exploration all this time. She’s compassionate, stubborn, driven, and grounded. She doesn’t have to be an action hero to save lives, nor does she need to be of a person’s race or species to empathize with them. In short, she’s what we should all aspire to be like. I loved Binti, and I personally can’t wait to start reading the next one. There are two more novellas, to my knowledge; Home and The Night Masquerade (that one is the cover that originally brought my attention to the series, actually). There’s also a completed collection of the three, unsurprisingly title Binti: The Complete Trilogy. So it’s your call in how you want to read the three of them.Binti: The Sacred Fire Binti: The Sacred Fire was an unexpected short story I came across while reading Binti: The Complete Trilogy. It’s a true short story, instead of a novella. But honestly, it felt so much more in depth than one would expect in such a short time frame. This short follows Binti as she adapts to her new life and in many ways, her new body. It was really wonderful to get inside her head a bit more here. To really see the clashing cultures of Binti’s life. The old versus the new. The traditional versus the modern.Binti has come up against so much, and so much has changed. It’s no wonder she needs some time to process everything. Luckily for Binti, there are some understanding people in her school. The few supportive people she finds should be an important support structure for her. At least, I hope we’ll see them in the following two novellas. I’ve come to like them in this very short time.Binti: Home Home is the second novella in the Binti trilogy by Nnedi Okorafor. It takes place about a year after the events in Binti. That means it’s been a year since Binti resolved the war between two races. A year since she arrived on another planet. A year since she started class at Oozma University. A year since she’s been home. There’s a short story in between the first novella and the second, called The Sacred Fire that I would absolutely look into. This was a beautifully written novella. Binti was so lost and confused – as many in her position would be. She’s had to learn to be herself thousands of miles from home, having lost the support structure she grew up with. She knows she turned against her culture in some ways, while desperately clinging to what she has left.If that wasn’t enough, she also has the trauma of what she went through to get here, and the physical changes brought onto her because of her proximity to it all. So, of course, Binti is lost and confused. It makes perfect sense.Binti’s search for finding peace within and for herself was beautifully written. She has so much to balance in her life, and while some of it may seem to surreal to put ourselves in her shoes, many other elements feel so familiar that it aches. The revelations about Binti’s culture and her family was fascinating. It explains so much about her character; who she is and why she has made some of the choices in her past. It put an interesting light on the whole situation.I’m very much looking forward to reading the third novella in the series, The Night Masquerade. I have a lot of questions that still need answers, and I’m counting on the final novella for all of that.Binti: The Night Masquerade The Night Masquerade is the third and I believe final novella in the Binti trilogy. Part of me hopes that the series will continue, but I also have to acknowledge that it had the perfect ending here, so it is what it is I suppose. Binti: The Night Masquerade was actually the first novella I spotted about Binti, and is in truth the reason I searched for the beginning and wanted to read everything. I feel in love with the cover, the title, and the description. I’m going to be up front and honest with you here; this novella made me cry. A lot. It was exquisitely written and managed to perfectly tug at my heartstrings. I felt so much for Binti and everything she believed in and worked for. It was impossible not to be emotionally moved by some of the events that occurred in The Night Masquerade. This novella was everything I could have hoped for when it comes to a conclusion for Binti’s story. It was beautiful, it was compelling, and it had so much going on within it. It also gave a strong sense of closure – though I wouldn’t say that the door is shut either. There’s room to continue if Nnedi Okorafor chose to do so. I haven’t compared the page count between the three novellas, but I feel like this one was the longest of the three. It certainly felt like more happened during the course of it, at least. So perhaps my perception is skewed because of that. I’ll admit that there were parts of this series that reminded me a lot of other series. Like Three Fish – she absolutely reminded me of Farscape. But other parts of the series felt whole unique – a set of circumstances blended together into something truly different. I loved Binti’s journey; her determination and drive as well as her devotion to her history and familial beliefs. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to try and balance so many different and sometimes even opposing hopes and beliefs. While I’m sad that the series appears to be over, I’m looking forward to seeing what Nnedi Okorafor will come up with next.
