The man is deeply in love with his countryside and its traditions and he writes so well. It enriches the experiences of the past tours and should be read before one goes. A lovely read.

The shepherd's life, and the sheep's life, isn't the lovely poetic dream one could imagine when just passing by as a tourist or hiker.But it is also the free life of a man who is his own boss, among a community of similar hard working families, with its times of sadness, frustration, anger, despair almost, followed by moments of pure happiness and beauty.What makes this book so unique is that you never doubt the truth of any of it. Nothing has been prettified or omitted as not good enough for a book.I have learnt a lot from it about nature in that part of the world too, as I live far from it.
Because I love Ireland and most especially the landscape with the stone walls, sheep and old farms, it seemed essential that I read The Shepherd's Life. My grandfather was a veterinarian in Idaho back in the day, and reading of the impact of three generations working the land and animals similar to the way in which my grandfather did, it made an impression. The life of a shepherd is not easy. There are many districts in the UK where certainly the land is more friendly - the Lake District holds a unique challenge to farmers who must deal with severe weather during the winter months. The man who authored this book elected to expand his days with some education at a prestigious institution not far from his home, and this learning forged another way of life which subsequently took him away from the farm. Not for long, however, as he longed for the work, for the weather, and for the bond of family and friends. Read this and you will understand why we Americans often talk of our flag flying over comfortable porches while sitting in rocking chairs sipping lemonade! We WANT the familiarity of home after a time away. As the author did. His pride in raising daughters who became lovers of the sheep, who could coax them from the ewes without causing a ripple of anxiety, and who learned, as their father did as a child, that the pride and skill in caring for the animals and the land should always be of prime importance to who they became, and who we are...
I found this book a great read about the real Lake District and the people who still care to protect their animals and a way of life that most of us know very little about and ought to respect more than we do. I read the book from my local library and wanted to have my own copy of it.
Wonderful and quite unique. School dropout to Oxford degree (essentially just to "show them that I wasn't dumb")., but after the degree back to the farm as quickly as he could. Highlights the complexity of an occupation many (including his former fellow schoolmates) look down upon as well as the tremendous satisfaction that balances the incredible amount of often very dirty, strenuous work required.
I loved this book, even the boring bits. It is such a man against nature, man with nature story. I was fascinated all the way and thoroughly recommend it to anyone who loves a good account of human endeavour, against the odds.

I love reading this book with a cup of coffee and my feet up. A comfortable book. Tips on sheep keeping are nicely mixed in with antidotes about life in general.
