One of my favorite books of all time. A life inside Hustler? What could go wrong? MacDonell holds no punches about his world of being inside Hustler and working within the smut world. I loved it. It's a great autobiography of the literary life of adult magazines, and a life that most people will not end up seeing for the most part. It's a fast read, but it holds your attention from the very first page. I'd like to hear a follow up to this one, it's that good.

this book illuminates what it's like to be working a job that you both love and hate at the same time. Over and over again McDonnell finds himself in delicate situations dealing with marginal characters that make him question his on sanity.I worked a few years in this business myself and this book is not only an accurate description of the day to day of the porn business, it's a an accurate description of the conflicted but aware mindset that goes along with working in any questionable business.

This is an interesting book by a writer who worked his way up the ranks at Hustler magazine for twenty years. He's brutally honest about the inner workings of the magazine including his descriptions of the pedophile Dwaine Tinsley and the sociopathic Larry Flynt, as well as about his own moral and social failings. This is good reading for anyone interested in the history of the magazine or in learning about what it was like working inside the porn magazine industry during the latter part of the Twentieth Century. As to be expected it's sexually explicit so if that bothers you, you might want to skip this one. The sexual descriptions were not gratuitous and I felt they were necessary for the honest story-telling this book provides.

I found the book hilarious, entertaining, educational, and a real gas to read. Hustler magazine apparently didn't feel the same because they have labelled McDonnell the "A**hole of the Month" in their current issue (pretty ironic considering that McDonnell wrote that column for over a decade!). They accuse him of being a drug addict who drove the magazine into the ground (even though he explicitly explains in the book that he stopped all drug and alcohol abuse following a near-fatal DUI incident). If you've read even one issue of Hustler, you'll enjoy the heck out of this book. The stories of grotesque celebrity videos, Larry Flint's shockingly explicit activities and racist sense of humor, and having to put up with arrogant sleazeball child rapist Dwaine Tinsley (of "Chester the Molester" fame) will keep your eyes glued to the page. In short, another winner for Feral House.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll wish that once in a while you had actually read some of the articles. This book is as hilarious as Hustler often was during Allan's tenure. A common misconception about this book is that it is about Larry Flynt. This book is not about Larry Flynt--it is about Allan MacDonell. If you want to learn more about Larry Flynt, you should probably visit his website. If you want to learn more about what it is REALLY like to oversee the day-to-day operations of America's most notorious stroke rag--penile scabs and all--then this is the book for you! My only complaint about Prisoner of X is that Allan has not yet recorded an audio-book version, but that's coming up next, right Mr. MacDonell?

I’m a regular artist and was looking for some information on how to create designs that tattoo artists can use for my clients. I got some great tips from this book and a general idea of the process for sketching things out to fit the body.The only thing I wish it had was an overview of what techniques are possible in applying the actual ink to skin - shading, cross hatching, etc. This would really help with the design part.It did answer some questions I had though! While the main part of the book is pretty limited to Japanese and Traditional styles of tattoos, I think the information and advice is still transferable to other styles. Thanks!

This book is a piece of artwork in itself! The pages are packed with full color illustrations and the physical quality of the book is terrific. I bought this for my daughter, who is an artist and looks for inspiration from multiple art forms...this is definitely a great source of inspiration and filled with fascinating text as well! You don't need to be a tattoo artist or even aspire to be, to thoroughly enjoy this book!

No real tutorials or instructions, just a lot of (boring) photos of tattoo designs, mostly by the same artists. I was hoping for more detailed information or photo tutorials.

Impressed how this book is set up and the price. A tattooer is never done learning. And even with experience, one should be able learn something new from this book. But at the same time it doesn't teach everything. Which is good because you only get out what you put into tattooing. And if you really thought you could just buy a book and learn all the secrets to tattooing, do us all a favor and quit.

Not what I though, but good info, not a lot of pictures or what I want.

Great book if you want to look at expensive weddings. I was hoping it would have broader appeal to those on budget. Not sure I want to give to my future daughter in law as planned.

I loved all the pictures they included in the book. They not only described the ideas and things really well, but they gave you lots of visuals which is extremely helpful for people to picture it on their minds!

Love the diy ideas

Such a beautiful book, full of inspiration!The first section is all about how to figure out your style, incorporate a theme and personalize the details with things like color and cultural traditions. The second section is full of real wedding photos, broken down by style like "rustic", "classic" and "eclectic". Even the styles that weren't "me" had cool ideas mixed in. They also have blueprint pages so if you know you're "romantic" it gives you examples of colors, styles of dresses, etc. Super helpful. The last part is all about DIY crafts for your wedding, like how to make copper wire table numbers or leather cufflinks for your groomsmen. They all seem really straightforward and easily adaptable for your wedding style which I like because I'm not a crafter!The book is a great gift for a newly engaged bride who's just starting to imagine her wedding day or someone who wants to get their hands dirty and put a personal touch on their wedding.

When I got married 24 years ago this month, there weren't many nice wedding planner books out there to choose from. (Most of the time I just stuck with my subscription to Bride magazine). The Knot: Yours Truly is a truly beautiful book, and any bride-to-be would be lucky to have it. The pictures are stunning, and there is a TON of helpful tips and ideas that the author took from real weddings and included in this book. There are several pages with craft ideas, providing the list of supplies needed and simple to follow instructions - some expert tips too! It kind of makes me wish I could go back and do mine all over again, but this time in a country theme, right down to the hay bales and mason jars.I have two grown sons, and I can't wait to give this book to a future daughter-in-law, so she can use it to plan their wedding. First of all: Ferber is not a monster who lets babies cry themselves to sleep. If you give this book a chance you will see that. Since being born and after 12 months of dealing with our baby waking up every 1 to 2 hours and not knowing how to fall back asleep on their own, we tried the techniques in this book and saw results from the very first night to the tune of our baby sleeping for 10 hours straight for the first time since he was born! And the results just kept getting better and the crying almost completely went away. For those on the fence about Ferber, there are however several keys to successfully implementing his techniques. The first and most important is both husband and wife need to be on board for keeping discipline to practice the techniques in the book. If one or the other can't take baby crying as they adjust to new sleeping conditions that do not require help from Mom or Dad, this book won't be of any help and will be the source of heated arguments putting unnecessary pressure on your marriage. The second key is consistency. If you do this for a few weeks and think your baby's sleep troubles are solved, it's likely your baby will regress back to the "easier" conditions that baby formerly preferred to sleep under (i.e. conditions where someone needs to wake up whenever baby wakes up to satisfy whatever condition(s) baby has been trained to think they need to fall back asleep). This will lead to no one in the house being happy. The final key which combines both the above keys is maintaining the same schedule every day to the best of everyone's ability. It's easy to fall out any routine, but if you slip on baby's routine, this will directly affect their ability to sleep. I'm sorry to say while my wife and I maintained discipline for the first 3 weeks on this book and our baby was sleeping through the night for 9 to 10 hours without our help, after 3 weeks my wife who had been struggling with how quickly our baby showed he did not need anyone's help reverted to going in at the sound of any whimper and after 3 or 4 days of this she's back to sleeping on the floor every night with our baby who again is waking up every hour or two and needing her to cuddle him back to sleep. While this is the exact type of sleeping arrangement I thought we were trying to avoid, this is proof to me that while the techniques in this book work, if both Mom & Dad are not on board your baby will revert back to whatever conditions they formerly fell asleep under and you'll have to start all over again. I hope my advice can be of help to others. Good luck!

I'll just sit here and wait for you to write your 5 star review after reading the book. Go ahead. I'll wait.Yup, as a first time mom, I thought "She'll sleep through the night at 3 months. Ok 4 months. OK SIX MONTHS. OMG PLEASE SLEEP FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MOMMY NEEDS HER SLEEP." So after trying solids and routines and blah blah blah, I finally gave in and read the book and did everything Ferber suggested. And 4 days later, BOOM. Sleep training complete. 9.5 hours of pure blissful uninterrupted SLEEP.A few things. Babies can sleep through the night around 3 months, but do what feels right. 6 months felt right for us.When you have a child that sits up in the crib and cries, and you want them to go back to sleep, do not pick them up to lay them down! Just rub their back and walk out.If their diaper is soaked and waking them up: feed them liquids earlier and spread it out. I nurse my daughter a little an hour before bed, then solids, then nurse a little more right before bed. Then I change her before she gets in the crib (this wakes her up but she's still drowsy). I also switched to overnight diapers. This solved a lot of our problems.Last, this is an easy read. And very relatable to every persons situation.

Dr. Ferber is a genius! I completely did not understand, and got the wrong idea about the Ferber method before i got this book. After, reading the book and understanding how exactly it works, i was relieved to find that it isn't just letting your baby cry for an hour by themselves. People who talk this method down, just don't really understand it. My 5 month old son would only fall asleep to the bottle. He would wake in the middle of the night needing either a pacifier, bottle, or to be held to go back to sleep. I like how Ferber explains how sleep works and how the wrong sleep associations for a child are important and it made perfect sense when I thought about it. I did the the sleep training and i am now on the third day. My son falls asleep completely on his own without needing to held to sleep or, fed to sleep, or using a pacifier. He now falls asleep completely on his own within 3-10mins of me putting him down in his crib and he sleeps completely through the night. I wish i got this book weeks ago. I am sooooo happy i bought this book. I would recommend it to any new parent trying to sleep train their 4month and up babies.

The writer has excellent writing skills and is able to describe what he observed in vivid detail. I would have given it a 5 star rating if he would have included sketches of some of the Indians he painted . I would also have been helpful if he included maps showing his travels and the location of the various Indian tribes. All that being said, this book was an excellent history of the American Indian in the 1800 hundreds.

The author traveled and lived among many tribes of the plains Indians during the 1830- 1840s. He used his talents as an arrest to document the appearance and clothing of the Indians and their customs and languages. An interesting book for anybody interested in such things.

I love authentic information on aboriginal perspectives. This book is beautiful and captures the character of our Indian peoples while they were still near their peak. It's a classic for anyone interested in the Native American experience.

Kind of scholarly work from a pro-Indian view. Noble savage 110%.

A unique visit back into another time and, use and understanding of the English language, and written narrative. Best and most educational read on the tribes of north America, their arts, customs, social and family orientations.

I have always been more comfortable with science and math subjects and never cared much for composition type classes. Working through this book is absolutely the reason I was able to score a 40 on the actual test. The book is laid out in a systematic order and has plenty of mini quizzes that help you test what you are learning to make sure you grasp the concepts. It is a big book and very well made. I highly recommend this for your GMAT prep.

I am preparing for the GMAT and I thought it would be a great idea to go back to the basics and this does exactly what it sets out to do. I bought the Kindle edition to read but I would probably recommend buying the paper version. The Kindle version ha some strange alignment issues although it doesn't affect the ultimate material. This is a book I intend to go back to before the actual test and I think it will be a great use of anyone's time to read.

References other books that you have to pay extra for. Advertised with standalone capability but clearly violates this.

Quick review. I've read through 4 chapters only so I can't comment on the entire book. So far I'm glad I purchased the book. Manhattan GMAT books are great. I have all of the strategy guides (paperback) and went ahead and got the Verbal and Math foundations as Kindle Editions. Overall the Verbal foundations does what it says. It goes back to the basics as a previous reviewer wrote. It's a great refresher for me so I don't mind that. Furthermore there are some great tips in the book that I find are very helpful. Now another reviewer said that you need other books as well, and I think it's fair to say but I believe that regardless of what GMAT book you're going to end up purchasing more than 1 book.Now comes the annoying part of the kindle editions. There are drills throughout the GMAT Verbal foundations book that ask the reader to for example analyze the parts of a sentence that are underlined. In the kindle edition, nothing is underlined!!! I thought well maybe it might be different on a kindle reader versus a kindle app. It's the same thing. If this will annoy you as it does me, spend the extra money and get the paperback.

Best book out there when you are starting to study GMAT. It might be a bit too basic for advanced users but it is good even for the native speaker

Great book if you know nothing about verbal. If you have decent understanding about grammar, you can skip this
