Stone worked alongside Caray for 15 years, offering color commentary for Chicago Cubs baseball games, until Caray's death in February 1998. Stone obviously enjoyed the experience, deferring to Caray's antics and malapropisms the way one would an eccentric uncle or spoiledbut talentedchild. Stone claims in the introduction that he wanted to give a clearer picture of Caray the man, rather than Caray the broadcaster, but the book, co-written with Rozner (a sports columnist and co-author of Ryne Sandberg's autobiography Second to Home, not reviewed) avoids deep insight or controversy by offering sketchy biographic facts about Caray: he was born Harry Christopher Carabina, was orphaned at a young age, grew up impoverished, and had an active nightlife, three marriages, and health problems. not that well written, good stories though, so worth the purchase. learned a lot about Harry I didn't know.

Although used, it was in new perfect condition and is an interesting book that is a must have for Cubs and Harry Caray fans.

Great book a quick read and is funny. Great insight from Steve Stone; a must have for Cub's fans who enjoyed both Harry and Steve on WGN!

All my cub buddies told me I had to read this. There are some funny stories and good insights but I didn't find it to be great like they said. Maybe they built it up to much but I was letdown a little.

Harry Caray was a self-made baseball celebrity with unlimited energy and love for the game and the fans. There will never be another like him. I loved the book and Steve Stone's way of bringing you back to those years when Harry made Cub fans out of millions of us In the South on radio and TV...

If you thought Harry Caray had anything to say, then maybe you'll be glad you bought this book. When Harry was forced to actually describe action on radio, he was as good as the best. When he went to television for the White Sox, he was somewhat fun, if not exactly descriptive. When he joined the Cubs' team on WGN, he became an appendage at best. Steve Stone is no more descriptive, and it shows in his memoirs of the "Harry Years." His writing does neither Harry nor Steve any favors.

I grew up listening to Jack Brickhouse broadcast the Cubs games on WGN-TV. When I moved away from the Chicago area in my twenties, I could no longer get the Cubs games until 1986 when we got cable. By then Harry Caray was the Cubs announcer. He took some getting used to. Listening to him constantly clearing his throat, mispronouncing names, repeating the same phrases over and over ("Summer resort weather in Chicago," "There's trouble here, Cheri," "Honesty compels me to say . . ."), I decided that the bland Brickhouse was far preferable.However, a few years after Caray's death I came across Steve Stone's memoir of his years with Harry. I couldn't put the book down. I bought a copy and read it cover to cover. Stone tells the story of his years as Harry's sidekick in a way that is funny, poignant, and even loving. In so doing, he reveals a side of Harry that did not come through on the air.The humorous anecdotes also make the book worth reading. The one where Harry went on and on during a broadcast about his discovery of seedless grapes, something he never knew existed, even though they had been on the market for at least forty years, is a classic, as is Steve's description of the time that Harry did the entire "Tenth-Inning" show while inadvertently sitting on the cough button, thus muting his voice.

I've read a few really good books on basketball -- David Wolf's "Foul," and John Feinstein's "A Season on the Brink" immediately come to mind -- but Rick Telander's "Heaven Is a Playground" is the best, for my money. This book captures not only the spirit of the game, but also vividly recreates a time (the mid-70s) and a place (Brooklyn).Telander was in his 20s in 1974 when he went to Brooklyn to spend a summer, in part because he was in search of the elusive playground legend James "Fly" Williams, who figures prominently in the book. During the course of the three months he was there, however, he met, played with, interviewed and befriended a host of regulars at the courts in Foster Park in the Flatbush section of the borough. They were African-American boys and men for whom basketball was far more than recreation. For many of them, the game was a way of life and even more importantly a form of self-expression.Besides Williams, Telander also met Albert King, then an astonishingly gifted 14-year-old, who was to go on to a successful NBA career. Telander brings to life the court skills of King and others, but he humanizes them, and this is where the great strength of the book lies. For example, King agonized over his talent, which brought him attention and adulation that embarrassed him and sometimes made him angry and withdrawn. Williams' incredible pure talent was married to an unpredictable and sometimes violent temperament that ultimately shortened his career.Despite an obvious empathy for his subjects -- he wound up coaching a group of teenage park regulars, with mixed on-the-court success -- Telander does not romanticize them. Flatbush, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Brownsville, where the action of the book primarily takes place, were poverty-stricken, crime-ridden places. Many of the people Telander spent extensive time with were scarred by their environment, and he does not try to hide that. Though the book is refreshingly free of a sense of "white guilt," Telander does agonize at one point over a boy he left off his team who succumbed to drug use and was later killed.At times funny, often poignant, and filled with a love for its subject, "Heaven Is a Playground" remains an engrossing, and still timely, read nearly 30 years after its publication.

I spent a lot of time in Foster Park from 1973 to 1979. I was not known as a baller, but I had some enjoyable moments. I became friends with many people mentioned and some of them became very good friends of mine. To some degree, heaven is how people thought of Foster Park. It was a place that you could chill, play cards, meet some nice people and enjoy basketball games, especially during June weekends in the late afternoons. This book gave a pretty accurate account of events that happened during this period. This was also a growing period for many people, including myself that life outside of Foster Park could be challenging for many. Many people found things different, some people are no longer with us, but some became better people from their basketball and life experiences at the schools they were able to attend. I left Brooklyn in 1979 and have worked many places in this country as a Welding Inspector. I presently live in Michigan and have 4 grown children. I bought this third edition to remember the people I knew on the cover and give a shout to the good people I met there and hope life is good.

This book is about a hot bed of baketball in inner N.Y.C. namely Bklyn in the mid 70's When the King wasn't called Lebron James, but King Albert (Albert King) averaging 44 a game in H.S. he was hailed & christianed the greatest ever to come out of New York City (although his pro career did not live up to the billing Albert & brother Bernard will always be fondly remembered). This book is about Albert and his come up through Bedstuy and so forth. It also gives you an inside look at some of BK'S playground legends circa 1970's and some of their tragic downfalls. The best N.Y.C. ball-book ever written will always be "The City Game" by Pete Axthlem, but this is a close 2nd.

One of the best books I've ever read! I spent some time in Brooklyn playing 'ball in the early 80's and must admit that this book was my guideline. Believe me, this is how inner-city basketball was in the 70's - 80's timeframe and R. Telander is to be highly commended for getting it right. I've probably read this 40 times since it came out and can still not put it down. I would just die for a follow-up story of what happened to all these people (from Fly Williams to Roy Hill)...Highest recommendation!

Very succinct booklet outlining how to create a capsule wardrobe. I especially appreciate the section devoted to wardrobe capsule for the over 50 client. Suggestions were appropriate and encourages the reader to try something fun and new. The capsule plans appear to be reasonable and achievable that most anyone can implement. Great new concept in clothing management!

The text itself is a quick, comprehensive read of the basics for us, who are stuck in a “jeans, sloppy bun, and sweater slump”, and the “kid friendly capsule” and “capsule over 50” cater to a more diverse readership, so I enjoyed the book well enough. It’s really short for us fast readers, but that’s not really a problem, if the book is priced appropriately. Where I started getting miffed were the recycled mood boards (same one used at least twice), and the pictures in my print copy being printed in black and white. I didn’t really mind, until I got to the diagram of recommended color palette, where I was staring at neat rows of various shades of grey labelled as different colors of the rainbow. I’m good with my own color schemes, but this can really hamper someone only depending on this book (I hope they’re few and far between) from achieving a cohesive color scheme. I’d still recommend the book, but might suggest the kindle edition...

This book gives some good, albeit common sense, tips on building a basic wardrobe. I have to agree with others that the pictures are worthless. Color pictures would be much more useful. Overall I find it useful and makes for a decent quick reference guide.

Pretty good introduction to the concept of a capsule wardrobe. No guidance on fit, fabric or style. Could be more in depth.

Love this book!! Really gets to the nitty gritty of getting your closet in shape...how to always have something to wear. SO helpful!!!! I just lost a lot of weight thanks to a two year hospital stay. Needless to say, when I got home- nothing fit!! So I was able to start out very easily, thanks to this book! Shopping is not NEARLY as difficult as it was before! And packing for a trip! SO much easier!! The greatest thing is that now I can indulge in shopping at higher end shops. The whole point is Quality over quantity.

This author has a great message and I found the information very useful. It was a shame how many typos were in this text. It was distracting. I usually dismiss an article as amateur when I find them and there were almost a dozen in this short book. I’d love to see a second edition with better editing and washing/ mending tips.

This was a short book with some good ideas for starting a capsule wardrobe.

Four boyhood pals in Derry, Maine, get together for a pilgrimage to their favorite deep-woods cabin, Hole in the Wall. The four have been telepathically linked since childhood, thanks to a searing experience involving a Down syndrome neighbor--a human dreamcatcher. They've all got midlife crises: clownish Beav has love problems; the intellectual shrink, Henry, is slowly succumbing to the siren song of suicide; Pete is losing a war with beer; Jonesy has had weird premonitions ever since he got hit by a car. Then comes worse trouble: an old man named McCarthy (a nod to the star of the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers) turns up at Hole in the Wall. His body is erupting with space aliens resembling furry moray eels: their mouths open to reveal nests of hatpin-like teeth. Poor Pete tries to remove one that just bit his ankle: "Blood flew in splattery fans as Pete tried to shake it off, stippling the snow and the sawdusty tarp and the dead woman's parka. Droplets flew into the fire and hissed like fat in a hot skillet." For all its nicely described mayhem, Dreamcatcher is mostly a psychological drama. Typically, body snatchers turn humans into zombies, but these aliens must share their host's mind, fighting for control. Jonesy is especially vulnerable to invasion, thanks to his hospital bed near-death transformation, but he's also great at messing with the alien's head. While his invading alien, Mr. Gray, is distracted by puppeteering Jonesy's body as he's driving an Arctic Cat through a Maine snowstorm, Jonesy constructs a mental warehouse along the lines of The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci. Jonesy physically feels as if he's inside a warehouse, locked behind a door with the alien rattling the doorknob and trying to trick him into letting him in. It's creepy from the alien's view, too. As he infiltrates Jonesy, experiencing sugar buzz, endorphins, and emotions for the first time, Jonesy's influence is seeping into the alien: "A terrible thought occurred to Mr. Gray: what if it was his concepts that had no meaning?" King renders the mental fight marvelously, and telepathy is a handy way to make cutting back and forth between the campers' various alien battlefronts crisp and cinematic. The physical naturalism of the Maine setting is matched by the psychological realism of the interior struggle. Deftly, King incorporates the real-life mental horrors of his own near-fatal accident and dramatizes the way drugs tug at your consciousness. Like the Tommyknockers, the aliens are partly symbols of King's (vanquished) cocaine and alcohol addiction. Mainly, though, they're just plain scary. In an author's note to this novel, the first he's written since his near-fatal accident, King allows that he wrote the first draft of the book by hand. So much for the theory that it's word-processing alone that leads to logorrhea. Yet despite its excessive length, the novel one of the most complex thematically and structurally in King's vast output dazzles and grips, if fitfully. In its suspenseful depiction of an alien invasion, it superficially harkens back to King's early work (e.g., the 1980 novella "The Mist"), but it also features the psychological penetration, word-magic and ripe imagination of his recent stuff (particularly Bag of Bones). The action shuttles between present and past, following primarily the tribulations of a band of five males four regular guys from Derry, Maine (setting of King's It and Insomnia), and their special friend, Duddits, a Down's child (then man) with telepathic abilities. The first chunk of the text offers a tour de force of terror bound in darkest humor, depicting the arrival at the four guys' remote hunting cabin of a man who's fatally ill because he harbors in his bowels an alien invader. Yet the ferocious needle-toothed "shit-weasel" that escapes from him is only one of three varieties of invader the protagonists, and eventually a black-ops containment force, face: the others are Grays, classic humanoid aliens, and byrus, a parasitical growth that threatens to overtake life on Earth. The presence of the aliens makes humans telepathic, which leads to various inspired plot complications, but also to an occasional, perhaps necessary, vagueness of narration is there anything more difficult to dramatize than mind-to-mind communication? Numerous flashbacks reveal the roots of the connections among the four guys (one of whom is hit by a car and nearly dies), Duddits and even the aliens, while the last part of the book details a race/chase to save the world a chase that goes on and on and that's further marred by the cartoonlike presence of the head of the black ops force, who's as close to a caricature as King has strayed in several novels. The book has flaws, then, and each of them cries "runaway author." Is anyone editing King these days? But, then, who edited, say, Mahler at his most excessive? The genius shines through in any case, in the images and conceits that blind with brilliance, in the magnificent architecture, in the wide swaths of flat-out riveting reading and, most of all, in the wellsprings of emotions King taps as he plumbs the ties that bind his characters and, by extension, all of us to one another. I didn't think a book with the title "Dreamcatcher" would grab my attention and hold it to the last page. It sounded like fluff, but the story is hard-hitting and it moves at a good pace. The characters are wonderful, interesting, and their bond is what makes "Dreamcatcher" the kind of story I'll be recommending to my family and friends. As far as sexual content, the characters make a few raunchy comments, but there's no actual sex scenes in the book. Believe me, it doesn't need it. Excellent read!

They soon find out it is supernatural in origin and it may have some relationship to their pastIt is a touching story of their friendship and their bond to a boy with Down syndrome and how that relationship saves them at the end.The military involvement is interesting and he ways the other being communicate is interfering and humorous.Not at a bad book but for a book that is nearly 1,000 pages I generally expect to be more satisfied

"Some dreams die and fall free, that is another of the world’s bitter truths. How many bitter truths there are."First thing you have to know about this: It's weird. It's really, really damn weird.Second thing: It's not Stephen King's best work. If you're not a King fan, this is not the book to change your mind. In fact, it'll probably just confuse you.But if you ARE a King fan, you'll appreciate King doing what he does best: Weaving incredibly real, visceral, heart-crushing relationships between characters, and focusing on the nitty-gritty, often ugly little things people do and think that make you, reader, feel so human.I don't think I'd call this a good book, or say that I liked it. It felt poorly planned. The flashbacks between childhood and adulthood weren't as seamlessly written as IT's were, and there were far too many boring military chapters that slowed the narrative to an intolerable crawl.However, like pizza and sex, it's still a Stephen King book, so how bad can it really be. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me shudder in disgust/horror, and it got me thinking Thinky Thoughts on the nature of humanity. I confess to only reading it to learn more about the expanded universe (mostly for background Derry info to use for fanfiction purposes) but I enjoyed it on its own merit, too.

If you're a fan of King, as I am, this won't disappoint. Very typical King style; building suspense, lots of detail and development of characters and the scenery, flashbacks for perspective (or other, sometimes seemingly non-sensical reasons), and characters with quirks that can make them both endearing and loathsome at the same time.I found the nitty gritty details of the plot to be confusing, but I think that's always the way with a King book. He reveals a lot, but generally not quite enough to really GIVE you the answer as to what just happened. That's part of writing true horror (not jump-out-of-your-seat horror, per se, but true to form horrifying storytelling), not always knowing all the who, what, where, why, and how.All in all, King is a fantastic storyteller, and this book is another example of his well-honed craft.People say that if you can sing well, you can sing anything and make it sound great. Well, I think the same goes for great storytelling. Even though there are some borrowed themes as others have pointed out (borrowed from other sources as well as from his own works), if you are a great storyteller, you will amp it up and make it your own. That's what King does here and I think it works extremely well. I never felt like I was reading a "remake" and never even got that funny "have I read this before?" feeling. The overall themes (alien invasion, body snatching, battling evil to save the world, etc.) are common, but the way King weaves his tale, you never really feel like they are.

The book has a fast pace for a Stephen King 's novel. Characters are very well developed, complex and interesting. The alien intelligence is almost human and not very surprising but it works in terms of building a monster. As in many of his novels everything checks out, all little details are accounted for and come to make sense in the end. Even the cheating student comes back in the end. Thus, this is a good book overall , well crafted.

I first started reading Dreamcatcher as a teenager after reading a couple of other Stephen King novels. I had to put it down after awhile because I found it very hard to follow. 17 years later, I approached it again hoping that I would be able to understand it. Sadly, I was disappointed. By about halfway through the book, I simply had to press the proverbial "I Believe" button and finish the book (I hate not finishing a book once I've started). I will say that the last few chapters of the book are very hard to put down; I read the final third of the book in just a few hours, and that reminded me of classic King. Overall, the book was interesting and engrossing in some parts, but not my favorite King novel.

I really like that Stephen King can keep coming up with quite interesting ideas as time goes on. I think that many things within Dreamcatcher have been used before, but I like also that King uses his own personal twist on a story. A book about long life and long lasting friendships, the power that binds us all, something that we can all relate to and appreciate it. I think Dreamcatcher is different and sometimes leaves elements out that could be explored more, but I thought it was incredibly interesting.

All of Joe Navarro's books are EXCELLENT and this is no exception. I've been keeping my eye out for it and I'm so excited it's finally out! The book is broken down by body part (Head, forehead, eyebrows, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, etc.) and then it further breaks it down on each category to illustrate what each gesture, etc. means. I highly recommend all of Mr. Navarro's books! He is a true expert in his field and he is very adept at explaining these concepts to the average person. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!

I loved Navarro's "What Everybody Is Saying" and I was eagerly anticipating The Dictionary of Body Language. The good and bad news is that it delivers as promised. It is bite-sized and still comprehensive in documenting the myriad aspects of body language and their possible interpretations. The disappointment, for me at least, is that there was no story-telling. The book is as dry as a standard reference manual, useful without being particularly interesting. I highlighted some pieces that I can see using ongoing, but I was just a little disappointed in the book relative to my own expectations.

I've been studying nonverbal behavior for many years, and have learned most of what I know from Joe Navarro and his wonderful books! This is the 6th book I've read by Joe, and what I like is that it is the first book that's a true Dictionary of Nonverbals I've come across. There are some online body language dictionaries, but in my experience, those are hard to navigate when looking for a specific signal. This is the perfect size to put in a briefcase or purse (see photo) so you can easily carry it with you when you travel or are going to a meeting and want to prep beforehand on nonverbal signals to look for... The book is well-organized, so you can find specific nonverbals easily. Like a word dictionary, it's a comprehensive listing of short explanations of a huge range of nonverbals. If you want stories to go with the nonverbals, you should also buy Joe's "What Every Body Is Saying" and "3 Minutes To Doomsday." As you can see by the photo, I carry this new book with me - highly recommend!

Echoing other reviewers, the author missed an opportunity for effectiveness by omitting pictures.The biggest disappointment is that the content doesn't match the "written-by-retired-FBI-agent-with-decades-of-experience" preface. Going through the book, it seemed like it was written for people who are severely lacking the ability to read body cues (defining hugging and its significance, for example) although there is interesting discussion of less obvious corporal gestures meagerly scattered throughout.Most of the mentioned body language has an ambiguous meaning or is a means of coping with stress; that is to say, the book was wholly inconclusive and repetitive.It is definitely an easy read given the content, length, and lack of pretentious language. I would not recommend, however, if you are looking for a in-depth study of human behavior and deception detection.

Mr. Navarro is the foremost expert in non-verbal behavior. I have read most of his books on the subject and this book is the quintessential non-verbal reference guide utilizing his years of study on this subject. I would highly recommend this book for anyone serious about studying non-verbal behavior. There are many authors out there that claim to understand non-verbal behavior but only Joe Navarro, in my opinion, has truly provided scientific substantiation to his observations.I would like to add that I believe reading his book “What Every BODY is Saying” first will provide a better understanding as to the contents of this book. Mr. Navarro is an excellent teacher of non-verbal behavior and I believe this provides another excellent example of his expertise on the matter.I would also recommend those interested in nonverbal behavior check out Mr. Navarro's website which, to me, has been an unbelievable resource for non-verbal behavior studies.

Half-way through it, exceptionally documented and insightful.If you only buy one book this Summer, this is it.Another read to enjoy with some practical situational awareness scenarios is The Book of The Underdog

You have a bunch of ASE tests to take. This is the book you need to do just that. It covers a lot of them and performs well enough for me to pass each one the first time. If you don't know anything about cars this isn't the book for you. This is a study guide for a professional needing a little help with their certification process. Get the book but don't loan it out. You won't get it back for you to take your recertification test when that time comes around.

I got this book as I liked having an all-in-one type prep book. It is put together good, but some of the content is not right. Some task lists are not uptodate. I guess I should have read the fine print. The book was put out in 2009. The book was still helpful to me though.
