I thought this might be a dry read, but it certainly wasn't. The author has a good sense of the practical questions gardeners face as well as a deep understanding of botany and is able to communicate concepts without being too arcane or too popular (dumbed-down). He uses good examples that illustrate the concepts vividly, so the reader finds it easy to understand. However, the thing in my opinion that sets this book apart is the obvious delight Capon takes in botanical processes; to him, every aspect is a tiny miracle, and his sense of wonder at how it all works together is both sincere and contagious. I highly recommend this little tome for anyone, botanist or not, who wants to enter into the understanding without losing the mystery. Love it!

This reference is so easy to understand! I participated in a Master Gardener class a few years back. The information related to botany that was provided by that program was very good, and a wonderful book was available for reference purposes. But I realllllllllly wish this book had been recommended for the botany information! The illustrations are fantastic (better in my hard copy than the Kindle, understandably), but the description of the botany of plant systems really "clicked" for me when I read this book. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in knowing how plants function - the first step in understanding how to care for them and keep them healthy!! I liked the Kindle version so much, I purchased the hard copy so that I had better access to the most excellent illustrations!

This book was recommended in the lecture notes from a botany class at the U.S. National Arboretum and it lives up to the recommendation and then some. The most impressive characteristic of the book is it makes botany truly interesting and compelling. The author accomplishes this no small feat by presenting the information clearly and in a very readable style. The writing is not dense and easy to understand with no training in botany.Strongly recommend the book to anyone with an interest in plants. It gives the reader a much broader understanding of the wonder and complexity of plants. One might ask the question, "Why should I be interested in plants?" One answer is: "Plants can live without animals, animals cannot live without plants." Another answer is: Most plants cannot move and plants have amazing diversity because they cannot move. This book reveals some of the fascinating diversity of plants.

I'm one of those people who is a hands-on learner, so to read directions about how to do somethingalways kinda snags me, but this book did a wonderful job on helping by its thorough classificationof plants and their characteristics. I've been a hard-core hobby gardener for 7 years, and I thought I knewplenty about identifying both food and herbal plants. This book proved I still have much to learn. I'm studying formy Master Herbalist Certification, and although the school has a few books about botany we must complete to graduate,I decided to add this one to get a more in depth understanding of plants and identifying them. Especially knowingwe are to be thoroughly tested on similar looking plants whereby the "twin" is actually poisonous, like Hemlock.Thank you Brian. I personally love to be able to go to different areas and States and identify plants and trees.

When a leaf naturally dies on a plant, what do you do?If your answer is to remove it immediately to keep the plant looking its best, you need to read this book.Yes, this book contains a great deal of information from the structure of cells all the way to the many and varied forms of plant reproduction. In and of itself, this information would be enough to make this book a good if challenging read. However, the tidbits the author scatters in passing such as the answer to the initial question above make this book all the more worthwhile.And the reason you shouldn't remove the dying leaf immediately, you ask? The plant is smarter than you think: it actually uses the time during which the leaf withers to remove nutrients and minerals to be recycled.Who knew?

What I like about this book is that, as a beginner in botany myself, it opened my eyes to better take care of plants in the garden. It's easy to read and things just tend to click the more you learn. Some of the jargon is hard to remember but the photos help understand what Capon is trying to illustrate; but sometimes he doesn't include figures which is frustrating. But after reading this book, I can now make inference on how to pollinate a flower myself, plant a seed the right way and how to cut into a tree without giving it too much trouble to heal. This book is not only for horticulture beginners but also for biology majors who are interested in plants.

“Botany for Gardeners” by Brian Capon I happened to ask a professional Botanist if there was such a thing as a credible primer on Botany written for non-scientific nature-lovers. Hoped for was a book that wouldn’t sedate me with mounds of Botano-jargon and esoteric tangents into the world of Bio-philosophy. He recommended this book highly. I thank him immensely. It’s logically organized, interesting, relevant, and written so actual people can grasp the subject matter. It’s helping me recognize and understand the plant cycles on my property and convert a few acres over to “natural area” for the benefit of birds and wildlife.

This book was required for a Botany/Horticulture Class at community college. The book is very concise and the author is very precise with every word. A very well written text! This book is very appropriate for college class, but may be too technical for the average gardener. Check it out at the local library before you buy.

I was surprised at how vague this manual was. It tryst to cover way to broad a range of motors. I found a factory service manual and got what I needed to correctly rebuild my carb and do other service on my outboard. If you need detailed instructions and information do as I did and find your engines factory manual. It's worth every penny and costs less than 1 hour of a professional outboard mechanic.

Exactly what I needed. Just purchased and 1986 Glasstron with Johnson motor. Needed to clean the carburetors and had very detailed instructions. Had no problems understanding the step by directions. Glad I purchased the book and I know it will come in handy again.

This manual helps with most issues on outboards but the trouble shooting refers to test devices that were made when many of the outboards were first produced - like 1980. It's not like the motor has changed but if you try and follow their guide you will find references to test lights that have not been in production for over 20 years.The pages look like they are copies of copies. Some are getting a little faded.

I never read Neil Gaimans Sandman when it first came out. A friend introduced me to volume one and I was lost for good. The story of Dream and his siblings, all I can say without spoilers is: Go. Go forth and read all of the volumes. You. Will. Not. Be. Disappointed.

I only recently got into comic books and have been pretty picky about what I like. In researching new series for me to read, I kept coming across The Sandman. The story sounded interesting but I was put off by the art style so held off on starting it. However, it kept coming up on blogs and forums. "XYZ Comic could be the next Sandman!" they said.So I gave in and bought the first two volumes. I read the first volume and was pretty sure it wasn't for me. It starts slow and appears to throw a lot of random information at you, almost all of it is irrelevant for the first issues featured in this volume. But I decided to read the second volume since I had already purchased it. I'm glad I did because that is where it really starts to come alive! The random information and characters aren't so random anymore. They have their own stories and developments that all tie back to the aspect of Dream.The writing is fantastic, the character development is believable, and the art brings it all to life. I've come to not only appreciate the series in it's entirety but have also become a big fan of the author Neil Gaiman. If you're like me with an initial hesitance, give it a chance. I'm really glad I did!

I became aware of Neil Gaiman in general - and Sandman in particular - listening to Tori Amos as a teenager. She has a line in a song called "Tear In Your Hand," on her debut album Little Earthquakes, that goes, "If you need me, me and Neil'll be / Hangin' out with the Dream King."Way back then, I researched it and found out about Sandman. But this was before the Internet, and before I had my own money to spend.Fast forward about *mumble* years. I've read several of Gaiman's novels. I've long since stopped devouring every Tori Amos album as soon as it comes out. (Or at all, to be honest.) And I'm browsing Amazon and come across The Sandman series. So I buy the first volume. Along with one of my favorite early Tori albums, just to really get back to my roots.I read Volume 1 in one sitting. I've never been much of a fan of comics. I read The Watchmen and, at my husband's urging, one of the Batman ones. The Dark Knight something or other. I like comic book characters, I love the Marvel movies, but reading graphic novels is difficult for me. I never know which panel to go to next, and I feel like I miss things.I'm not an idiot, I swear. There's just something about the way they're put together that makes it hard for my brain to digest.The Sandman was not too difficult to grasp, though. For the most part the action was clear, and of course Neil's stories were beautiful. I loved Dream, I adored Death, the art was phenomenal, and I couldn't stop turning the pages. I absolutely cannot wait to read the rest of the series. I am forcing myself to wait a few days before I order Vol. 2, because I don't want to spend $100 in one month on comic books. I mean, I DO want to, but I probably shouldn't.

This was a very interesting beginning to what is sure to be a very interesting series. I began The Sandman not knowing what to expect. I have only read one other book by Gaiman, and that was his collaboration piece with Terry Pratchett, so I wasn't all too familiar with his voice as a writer, let alone in this medium.It started off a little slow for me, and a little strange as well (there were some shining moments like Dream's visit to Hell). Around issues 6 and 7 though, I think Neil found his groove and I really got into the story. Dream is an awesome character. At once horrifying and compassionate. A man out for vengeance, but also wishing for peace. I am excited to see where the series goes from here.

This is truly an awe-inspiring piece of art. The characters, the plots, the art, and the atmosphere are simply amazing. I'm actually glad I didn't read this earlier in life (I'm in my 30s) because I don't think a younger me could have appreciated this for the story that it is, which if I'm correct, is a story about storytellers (and maybe Mr. Gaiman himself). Because, really, what are dreamers if not storytellers?

First up, all of the 10 volumes of The Sandman novels deserve 5 stars. They are a phenomenal acheivement in not only graphic novels but in storytelling itself. The story is complex and cerebral and the characters so well developed that Sandman is one of my favorite stories period. The novels are intensely violent and often disturbing but everything that happens serves a purpose, and nothing happens by chance or just for the sake of things happening. Something that happens in one volume may become vitally important 3 or 4 volumes later. By the end of the 10th volume everything has come full circle with an appropriate and satisfying end.With regards to Volume 1, many consider it to be a weak link in the series but I do not. Granted it is primarily focused on introducing characters and setting up the plot for the entire story, but it's done well. The plot concerns a cult attempting to capture and control Death. Instead they get her brother Dream, who is then held prisoner for decades. This is not without some disturbing consequences as people fall prey to a "sleeping sickness" and Dream's kingdom falls into utter disarray. Upon escaping Dream must regain control of his kingdom but in order to do so he must retrieve the sources of his power which he placed into objects. Subsequently these objects have been scattered during his imprisonment.As far as the volume's content on the Kindle Fire - I was hesitant to abandon the volumes in print worried that the Kindle Fire might provide a more difficult viewing experience. That hasn't turned out the be the case. The novel is easy to read, you can scan in to specific boxes, and the colors are vibrant.

While there is a lot of information in this book and it is designed very well, I think it’s disgusting how Europeans can never just focus on Egyptians without interjecting Greek terms that perpetuate racism. I was hopeful that the stories would be about Africans, but she made it about Europeans and how they stole Egyptian culture. She mentions the Egyptians as the originators but quickly reverts back to referencing Greeks. I’m very disappointed with this book’s inability to stand on truth as it was difficult to receive through an overwhelming focus on the Greeks.

This is a wonderful little book that compresses so much into a more or less readable edition. The content is great but the publisher made a huge mistake in the design of the book. The print is tiny (REALLY tiny) and pages are different colors which exacerbates the problem. Please bring out an edition that is actually legible.

The book is in excellent shape, but is s smaller version of the one I wanted. The print is so small that it is very difficult to read.

There are NO books by this publisher that I do not LOVE. This is (as expected) exactly what I had hoped it would be. Besides having many good recipes (no "weird" ones), the series of books include some amazing "tips and good advice" at the bottom of each page/recipe...from variations to cooking hints and tips and other very useful information! I cannot recommend Gooseberry Patch cookbooks enough to anyone and everyone; these are the very best!

Just received the book and when I went to flip through it, I noticed several pages were faded or missing the recipes all together... at least it was only in the first 30 pages but who knows if I would've enjoyed those recipes.

One of the best recipe books I have in my collection. I like the fact that is is dedicated to casseroles.

Gooseberry Patch cookbooks are one of my favorites.

I purchased this for my sister and she is thrilled with it.
