Good story, great illustrations based upon a Chumash Indian legend ; a perfect gift for a seven year old that loves to read.

Awesome item

"The Rainbow Bridge," retold by Audrey Wood with oil on canvas paintings by Robert Florczak, is inspired by a Chumash tale. The name of that Native American tribe will be familiar to young readers who watched "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," since several members of the Chumash tribe showed up one memorable Thanksgiving in Season 4 (and did things to Xander that cannot be discussed in polite company). The Chumash lived in what is now the central California coast from Los Angeles northward to San Luis Obispo. There were a peaceful people, known for their art, mainly basketry and cave paintings, and their distinctive social and spiritual culture. The Storyteller's Note at the start of this oversize book explains that the most famous invention of the Chumash was the "tomol," a plant canoe, that allowed them to trade with villagers on nearby islands. They were rather unique as a native people because they could find everything they needed in the environment in which they lived, without having to raise crops or domesticate animals.This story was inspired by an oral Chumash legend, expanded by Wood in terms of both characters and lengths. It begins with Hutash, the earth goddess, walking alone on the island of Limuw. Gathering seeds from a sacred plant she scatters them upon the earth so that there might be people, teh Chumash tribe, made in her own image. Along with her husband, the great wise Sky Snake (a.k.a., the Milky Way), Hutash loved the people and gave them gifts so that they would thrive. But then there were too many people and Hutash told the people that Limuw had grown crowded and in three days half of them must leave and go to the land across the water while the other half stay on her island. The rainbow bridge stretching from the highest mountain on Limuw to the highest mountain on the land across the water is how the people who left Limuw would travel to their new home.The problem is that some of the Chumash look down during their journey and fall from the great height in to the ocean, where Hutash must act to save them. The story of "The Rainbow Bridge" is part-creation story, which makes for parallels to Genesis and other creation stories, but there are obvious comparisons to be made to other sacred stories and legends in class discussion. Some additional research might be involved, but should be well worth the effort and class time spent on exploring issues of comparative mythology. A portion of the royalties from the sale of "The Rainbow Bridge" will be donated by the author for the further preservation and undersanding of the Chumash culture. The author even recommends "The Chumash People: Materials for Teachers and Students" from the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History as an excellent source of additional information you children.

This was a beautifully illustrated storybook about how Los Angeles CA 'came to be'. The way the Chumas Indians believe how the islands came to be and also how the dolphins are so sacred. This was an interesting book, nicely written but the paintings that are used as the illustrations is what REALLY makes this book. But becareful of younger children reading this, as an adult be ready to help educate them in the way you believe and how some tribes of Indians believe differently than some others etc. Doesn't mean that this story is untrue, just that it could confuse some younger children as they read it

This is a beautifully written and illustrated book. I recommend it for all ages.

I bought this for my nephew a few Christmases back, and he loved it! He had also gotten a magic set that morning, that he became bored with after a little while, but this Chemistry set held his attention for at least an hour or two. He was 8 at the time, and my husband sat and supervised him and helped him conduct the experiments. The experiments can be a bit messy so they did them on the patio table in the backyard. I think they can also be done in the house, but you should put a tablecloth or newspapers down first for the spills. Most of the ingredients for the experiments can be found around the house, or in the kitchen (i.e. baking soda, hyrdogen peroxide, food coloring, etc.) Because most of ingredients are household items, that means the experiments can be conducted multiple times, if the kids want to see the results again. Makes a great gift, I'd say ages 6+ supervised, they can probably handle the directions on their own with limited supervision by 9 or 10 or so.

This kit is terrific; it's simple, and doesn't try to distract you with a bunch of crappy pieces, just the essentials. My 8 year old daughter is loving this, but one BIG warning; the first experiment is terrific, but the kit DOES NOT warn you that when you electrolyse salt water, you are liberating chlorine gas as well as hydrogen! 2NaCl + 2H2O → Cl2 + H2 + 2NaOH I don't think it is in any significant quantity, but if you get a snorkful of it from the positive gas tube, it will be unpleasant! Also, NaOH is a product (aka caustic soda or lye). You begin this experiment with something nontoxic, and wind up with something that you really don't want your kids poking around in.That said, I love that this kit focuses on actually learning something about chemistry, as compared to most other kits that have you mix X and Y together to get some brightly colored snot-like substance, without much actual educational merit.

I made bad choice. I bought it for my 8 yr old son. But I don't think it is fun. I would call this an experiment instruction book rather than a kit. First, none of them I could start doing right away simply by opening the kit. In order to do any one of them, I would have to go out to look for and buy something unless I skipped one item (e.g. One needed unsalted salt. I think people will not usually have it around in their homes.). I don't mind of using cups, pots, candle, match, or salts, vinegar which we all have in the house. Most in the instructions was "teaching". My kids felt bored when I read those to them (my daughter is turning to 10). They kept asking me do it instead of reading it. They wanted to see actions. But less than half was to take chemistry actions. Most was to "educate" you, not to show you. Younger kids want to see and do but to read and listen. A couple of the "experiments" were to ask kids hold cut out tags from this kit to act as electron running around a proton. From this, you can get an idea on what kind of fun stuff it instructs you to do. I don't call it a chemistry kit. It may be a fine and short book for 6th graders.

I'll admit I gave my rating based on what I expected and that maybe I should have expected something different. This kit has no real experiments but is mostly things like "look how if you put a paper towel in water it absorbs it". None of the experiments were fun but maybe this was meant to just be educational. It does do a good job of explaining what is happening but i think will only be exciting for maybe children 8 and under.

The 7 and 5 yr old grandsons brought this to Grandmas house to do their experiments. We all had fun with the variety of projects although not all materials were included in the kit. But most were easily found in the kitchen. Some experiments we did more than once. The 7 year old was particularly happy because he learned many scientific terms and concepts that were taught a few weeks later in his class so he felt ahead of the game.

I bought this chemistry set for my niece who is more interested in science than in dolls.The directions were clear and easy to understand.There were various experiments to perform leaving little room for boredom.All in All she was very happy she received this gift. Science Wiz makes wonderful kits got imaginative minds.

I first purchased this kit from Borders and now again from Amazon. My daughter at the time was 6 when I first bought the set and she enjoyed it very much. She was glued to this set until everything was used. She is now 8 and is a science fanatic!! I have purchased other sciences kits and the Chemistry plus kit. I am just keeping her interested as she is always speaking of becoming a scientist when she grows up.

I bought this kit for my niece (7 years old) and the Chemistry set for my nephew (9 years old) for Christmas. I also sent them each a remote controlled helicopter. On Christmas Day, my brother called me and told me that he & his kids had been conducting experiments all afternoon, and they loved it. All of those toys that they had been given (including the remote controlled helicopters) remained under the tree, while they bounced from the kitchen to the living room to the back deck conducting experiment after experiment TOGETHER. They were having a blast.The thank you cards that I received from each of them a couple of weeks later thanked me for the Physics & Chemistry sets and told tales of the experiments they had conducted with their parents, with this little addition at the bottom, "The helicopter was nice. Thank you for that, too."I don't have children. But from what I can tell, they like doing fun stuff that amazes them. This Christmas, I'll be sending more science sets...
