All is not solved in this second book of the High House Ursa as another bear shifter, Kincaid, gets drawn into it and Haley, the human accountant that does the accounting for the High House. She accuses Kincaid of stealing which has the shifter reeling as well as the rest of the House. She is asked by the Queen to help him find evidence of his innocence, which leads to the two spying and breaking a lot of rules that Haley has a hard time adjusting to. When time runs out for them, will they have enough evidence to clear him.Another great instalment in this series and there is more to come, which I can’t wait for. Not my usual type of read but I enjoyed it thoroughly, the banter, the story, which almost makes me believe in shifters, vampires and magic. I liked the banter between them but I didn’t warm up to Haley till more than half way through the book. She was a bit too stubborn and a bi***, no matter what her reasons were but Kincaid I loved, the strong, yet gentle bear. I loved the fact that once the knew what they felt, they didn’t beat around the bush or run away from it.*I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
Because the attack was centered on mages, the danger was greater due to pressure sensors on the roof and other difficult-to-detect wards and spell defenses that only another magic user could sense. But unfortunately Kincaid, head of High House Ursa’s operations in the European theatre, didn’t have a true magic user available to him. Instead, his Queen had sent Kvoss to help him – and they had never gotten along.The rogue mage, Samuel Girard, was pinned down and trapped in the building they were preparing to enter. Kvoss, using magic through artifacts since he had no magic himself, prepared the scene for battle so that humans would not see what was happening, and Kincaid led the attack. Apparently their target was more powerful than they were told which made their assault even more difficult. In a brilliant move, Kincaid told his men to throw any object that was currently on fire onto the mage who had a magic shield protecting him. It kept the objects off of him, but he could not defend and be protected from his own magic and the sparks from his magic fires burned him and distracted him from maintaining his shield. Both Kvoss and Kincaid used their weapons against him and the mage was defeated. They cleaned up the scene and Kvoss and Kincaid were called back to Ursidae Manor by the Queen.The Queen was presenting Kincaid to the men in power and asking them to make him a Title Holder, allowing her to then appoint him to the position of Hunter. He would also need a mate in this role and would be imbued with magic to enable him to locate mates for unmated Title Holders they were trying to replace to restore the power. The House positions had to be filled as quickly as possible to face the dark that was to come.Queen Kaelyn had asked the accounting firm to check the books after the recent traitorous uprising. Haley Meynard found ten thousand dollars which had been taken from the House account, moved around suspiciously, and put into Kincaid’s account. The Queen knew this was a setup and ordered Haley to work with Kincaid to find out who really stole the money and clear Kincaid’s name. It was very obvious traitors were still trying to block the bears loyal to the Queen from accepting the new positions, and she would not allow that.Haley was convinced of Kincaid’s guilt, but he insisted he was innocent. And then the facts began to support his claim of innocence! Haley was in a world she didn’t understand. But working with Kincaid drew her closer to him. Would they be able to find proof in the short time the Queen gave them to find the truth? She could not stall for too long, and she could not appoint him without that proof of innocence. And Haley was beginning to have feelings for Kincaid. What would she do about that??I really love this series. This book was even better than the first and will draw the reader right into the exciting, fast-moving story line. The characters are strong and decisive, worthy of respect. With loyal subjects being so critical now, it is crucial to protect the Queen’s choices in rebuilding her key positions. Dive into this wonderful series and see how the traitors will be identified and dealt with! It will be a difficult task!
