This is the newest addition to the series of avatar comics, and follows the same formatting as the others. The book is hardback and has quite a bit of weight to it compared to other books. The cover has vibrant colors, as do all of the pages contained in it. The only difference between this version of the comics and the individual volumes is that this contains all three volumes of Smoke and Shadow, has bigger pages, concept art, and notes from the creators in the margins of the pages. For the price, you would be losing money if you bought all the volumes individually, so I highly recommend getting this edition.As for the story, it's no worse than the other avatar comics. It's not better either, but maintains the same level of quality that you would expect from the avatar universe. The plot features Zuko as the main character, as does 2/3 of the other comic series, which can be disappointing if you're expecting much from other characters. The only plus to this is that Zuko's supporting characters are incredibly interesting, and the lore of the fire nation doubly so.Overall, this is an amazing book and I will continue to look forward to purchasing future avatar series comics.

The library editions are the way to go for these Avatar additions! These books are hard cover with a mix of matte and glossy finish. They're all larger books (think the size of a game guide.) The art inside is top notch (as expected) and includes some thoughts from the creators on the side panels. The back includes step by step process art for characters and cover art.Smoke and Shadow, specifically, focuses on Zuko after he has become emperor and the rising tensions between the fire nation proper and long conquered fire nation territories that identify with being Earth nation. A new threat has popped up throughout the Fire Nation where children are being snatched from their homes. Zuko and Aang must find and cut off this threat before the people of the Fire Nation depose Zuko.Of the 4 library editions, this compilation has been my least favorite, but that in no way means that I thought the story was anything less than excellent. I encourage all Avatar fans to read these if they want to continue journeying with Aang and see how the world of Korra is created.

I jumped on the Avatar train way too late and binged all three seasons. Afterwards, I thought I had had enough, but I was intrigued by the availability of a comic book series. I was a bit tentative at first because the show was so good and I didn't want my opinion of the show to go down, but the books have made me even more of a fan. The story has the same tone of the show, and the artwork is amazing. I love how Gurihiru is able to capture the different bending styles.After finishing this volume, I couldn't wait to start "The Search"!

I love this book. After binge watching all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender with my family, I was seriously missing the gang...most of all, Aang. I kept wondering why they didn't make more seasons and wishing that I could find more stories of Aang after the series ended. I am so glad that I came across the Avatar: The Last Airbender books. The illustrations are beautiful and the dialogue is on point with the characters. I read this book with my boys almost every night before bedtime. It makes us feel like we're back in their world, though I personally still miss hearing their actual voices. I am definitely going to get the other books in this set and highly recommend this book.

This is the first issue of a great series! Off to a slow start, the drawings get better as the story goes, as well as the dialogue. As a matter of fact the second issue features many moments that seem like they come straight out of the show. If you love the series, I highly recommend these comics.The comic series is broken up to 3 issues per storyline. I found this first storyline to be kind of like the author just getting their feet wet in the Avatar universe. The second story, The Search, is where it really starts to get good. But I still recommend the Promise just so you can be treated to Toph's Metal Bending school. It's perfect! There are also some other story elements that you might be sorry you missed if you skip ahead.And, I know it's noted elsewhere, but the creators of the show work closely with the creation of this series as well.

I am 70 years old, grew up in a very integrated northern urban community. I thought I knew something about race, but Jesmyn Ward and her memoir proved to me that I knew nothing. Now, I know just a little, and I thank her. If you want to know a little, read this book.

This book was very well written, and I think it's an important and easy to read representation of being poor and Black in the south. I have to be honest, it was really hard for me to read this, it has a lot of tragedy surrounding racism and income inequality has put Black people in Mississippi in a terrible situation, and how difficult it is to get out of. You're probably going to cry, but you're also going to learn a lot about the way people in our own country live, how awful it is, and how important it is that we advocate for change.

I purchased Men We Reaped after a riveting hour-long interview Jesmyn Ward gave to NPR radio stung me with anticipation.The book changed my life.Ward takes you back and forth through time seamlessly, on a journey to uncover meaning behind the deaths of five men in her life. Along the way I played devil's advocate in my head. As the answers begin to appear through the Louisiana fog, I looked for 'holes' in the theory. I found no valid reasons why a critic might dismiss her case.That's just one of the themes. There are others, but simply listing them here in a sentence would be an injustice. Ward weaves them into the memoir using the very personal thread of her own life story. Technically, the writing is a virtuoso; I found myself re-reading paragraphs and wondering, 'How did she just do that?' Emotionally, it is raw electricity.Simply put, everyone needs to read this book. It is too important not to.

This memoir inspires deep empathy and cracks a window onto the experience of rural, black poverty. This isn't a scholarly overview of the problems young black people face, it's an emotional overview that captures and transmits the frustrated hopelessness and grief that crests when Ward loses yet another friend or family member.

I left the Mississippi Delta in 1990 for college and law school after that.Through the years, my voice has been stifled by the pain and hopelessness I feel when I watch or hear of the systemic poverty and lack of hope in Mississippi.As a lawyer people often ask me to speak on my childhood, my life after leaving Mississippi, how I feel now when I return to visit my mom, my siblings, my dwindling aunts and uncles. I have never been able to verbalized the anguish, the torment that materializes in my dreams on a monthly basis and culminates with me falling into a black hole thick with sewage.Until now, I hadn't read of a book that gave life to my childhood, to my mom's struggles and triumphs. Until Men We Reaped, I felt alone and stuck in these memories. Thanks be to Ms. Ward for trudging through her memories and giving life to the lifeless men of her family and community.This book is one of the best I've read in a long while, and I read quite a bit. I finished the book this morning, and I am picking it up again next week to highlight some of the lyrically poignant pieces that speak to my soul, the inner child that had to grow up very quickly in order to survive, to thrive.Now I know this book is not only for my Mississippi family. Not only for black folk or poor folk or oppressed folk. This is a book for humanity. For the man who can't seem to find the life that settles warmly around his shoulders. For the moms who struggle to hold it together when all they really want to do is disintegrate from the inside out. For the sons who want to leave a legacy but are too xxxx to break away and fight for their right to exist, be, do. For the daughters, like me, who are, out of necessity, taught to be strong-willed, strongest, strong-bodied, strong-24/7 but who need to be allowed to be weak and wanting and vulnerable and woman.Buy this book. Time is a tricky thing to deal with theologically. There are elements of repetition, and elements of once-only. In our church experience, we look back on the once-only kinds of events (both historical and revelatory) through a cyclical pattern that has varying spans; perhaps the most significant is that of the church year, which follows the progress of the seasons, allowing for variation, but also adding stability to the way in which we as a community approach God and the narratives surrounding God's action in the world.As Vicki Black states, there are two primary cycles in the church year. The first is the Advent-Christmas-Epiphany cycle, and the second is the Lent-Easter-Pentecost cycle. Traditionally, the church year is said to begin at the first Sunday of Advent. This day is always the fourth Sunday before Christmas; while Christmas is always December 25, the variability in the calendar means that the actual date for the beginning of Advent changes from year to year. This cycle continues through the Epiphany, after which 'ordinary' time takes place until the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. ('Ordinary' time refers to the fact that these weeks are numbered with ordinal numbers - second Sunday after Epiphany, etc., and not to the fact that they are outside any of the greater seasons of the church.)Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which falls on different dates in different years, dependent upon the date of Easter. Unlike Christmas, which is fixed on the calendar (which is the Roman solar calendar still in primary use in the world), Easter shifts from year to year, as it is pegged to the Jewish celebration of the Passover, which is governed by a lunar calendar. Lent lasts for 40 days (exclusive of Sundays) until Easter. Holy Week is technically a part of Lent, but has different colours and aspects as things go up to Easter; the Easter season continues until the feast of the Pentecost 50 days later, at which time the church goes into the second, longer period of 'ordinary' time, until the advent of the next Advent season.Black discusses each of these six elements (Advent-Christmas-Epiphany and Lent-Easter-Pentecost) in separate chapters, along with a special chapter on Holy Week, and an introductory chapter. Black's development is personal, in that she discusses how she incorporates this into her family with her husband and son; she also allows for variations of practice in different parishes and dioceses. There is a minimum of technical language here - the text is very accessible, yet doesn't 'talk down' to the reader. It is both engaging and inviting.The book can be used by a discussion group at the church - despite the division into eight chapters, it could easily be used as a Lenten discussion book or for an inquirer's class to learn aspects of the church year. There are potential discussion questions listed at the back of each chapter. The book itself is rather short and easily read in a short time, but can be useful as a reference throughout the year, too.This is part of a series by Morehouse Press, which also includes 'Welcome to the Book of Common Prayer' (also by Vicki Black), 'Welcome to Sunday' and 'Welcome to the Episcopal Church' (both by Christopher Webber). All of these books are great as introductions to the ways (sometimes mysterious) Episcopalians do things in church - useful for newcomers as well as life-long members who might never have learned the 'why' behind what the church does.

All the Welcome to series are excellent, and I have purchased them. I have rated them 5 stars since they have "earned that designation" for me. I have, until recently, been a hit and miss Episcopalian so these books have really helped me to become comfortable and much more knowledgable. Well worth the money, for sure.
