About the Author
Mandy Southan trained at Ravensbourne College Of Art And Design and has a BA Hons. in Fashion/Textile design. She is president of the Guild of Silk Painters and a member of The Sussex Guild. She has painted on silk for many years and is particularly interested in traditional Japanese resist techniques. She experiments continually to find new ways of using old methods and her work on silk often combines different resist processes. This book really wasn't what I was looking for at all. There is a lot of instruction on different dying techniques, but very little on cloth manipulation to achieve specific shibori effects.
I'm coming from the point of someone who knows a bit about shibori, has some experience dyeing on various fibers using various techniques. I have a degree in textile design so I probably know a bit more than your average joe.This is a decent overview of shibori. It covers various types, and does a brief section on each technique and shows pictures of the various steps. The photographs are well done and the instructions are clear.The author covers both acid dyes (silk- protein fibers) and fiber reactive dyes (cotton, cellulosic fibers) but sort of jumps around alternating techniques in silk and cotton. The author never goes into detail about the dyes just sort of gives this weird general information..so she might talk about illuminating dyes but only for silk...which leaves you wondering if there is an equivalent for cotton. She really focuses on the resists-- so if you have never dyed fabric before this book will not give you much technical information by way of ratios and recipes, but you can easily find those things online.The author/publishers were trying to hit all the marks for the average hobbyist but it just sort of grazes them instead. I learned a few things I did not know such as capping with cellophane (can't find the book right now i'm going from memory) but I honestly wish I had just spent the extra money to get the more serious books. I certainly didn't get any real tips on what might go wrong in a project-- you would have no idea what happened if you did stitched shibori and lost your design-- which happens! Qualities of dye and cloth, working with thickened dye are all things that would have been great if she had gone in to just a LITTLE bit of detail about. So I can't really recommend the book if you are looking for serious technical information.
Just hosted an indigo dye party (Sip & Dip) with a few friends. This book was passed around several times for new dying techniques. Using the wood squares and popsicle sticks from the indigo kit created new designs. Next year, we will have pvc pipe for even more wonderful Shibori creations!
I was trying to figure out if learning Shibori was something that would interest me. In reading this book, I loved how the basics of a handful of Shibori techniques were taught in a wonderfully simple manner with stunning results.Would I buy it again, if I had a redo? I think so! It has definitely simplified learning some of the techniques of Shibori, and peaked my interest in learning some more, without overwhelming me with lots of pictures without instructions like another Shibori book I ordered at the same time.
Very useful and inspiring contents. It widened my knowledge of resist dyeing, and I enjoyed experimenting with techniques.
Good pics and instructions. This along with Shibori and Surface Design Workbook can launch you into a wonderful experience. I'm a beginner and I'm very glad that I have this resource.
I was first drawn to Shibori from a book that jumped off the shelf at me in an art supply store a few years ago. I didn't know how I could actually learn to do them and circumstances were such that I didn't follow up on beginning, but deep down I knew I would eventually begin working with these techniques. This book has offered that opening - pictures aplenty with instructions under each. I'm visually oriented, and this helped alot! Her directions are primarily for the beginner, and have me wanting to advance. I'm glad I bought the book.
Very basic book. but has useful information with big, colorful pictures. Most of the information can be found on the internet but it is handy to have it one place.
