#2,799 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I don't typically write reviews about books. I've read close to 20 SK books in the last year and a half and over more in my life...this is so unlike his normal character as a writer that it's unnerving. I've read IT, the Stand, 'Salem's Lot, Carrie, Dark Tower series 1-7.5(?) - everything chronologically before this book and tons of newer stuff (I'm working back through his catalogue from start to finish). Nothing compares to this. Prepare for the darkest form of horror. I can't with good conscience recommend anyone to read this book. It gave me nightmares every night that I read it. I woke up thinking about it, and couldn't get it out of my head. I'm reading something else as fast as I can...can't wait to get back to the basic SK. Nothing else holds a candle to this.

I finished this book about a half hour until midnight tonight. I had always loved the movie growing up so my brain conjured up the idea of reading the book. Seemed innocent enough and my sweet little naive mind thought, "how bad can it possibly be?" I read some of the other reviews just to see what I was getting myself into. After some peer research, I felt adequately prepared for the task at hand. As I sit here with all the lights on in my house, Boy Was I Wrong! I have been a little more jumpy and experiencing some pretty bizarre dreams since I began reading but nothing prepared me for the sheer terror I was in store for as I read the last 100 pages or so. By the time I reached the final pages, my hands and feet were ice cold and clammy. I am almost 30 years old and I was terrified to leave my bed to go to the bathroom. I worked up the courage (or my bladder couldn't take it any more) and embarked on the trek to the bathroom. As I passed my children's bedroom, my two year old started screaming and crying in her sleep. I am about 99.9% sure that I lost a little piece of my soul (and possibly gained a touch of PTSD) from fright! Overall, this book is great and by far the scariest thing I have ever read. If you have never read it, I highly recommend it!

I have to hand it to King- there's a reason this guy sells billions of books. He can really tell a story, flesh it out and pace it very well. He's also great at creating a believable, ordinary setting and then infusing the supernatural in a fairly believable way. Like others, I found the beginning of the book a bit too slow of a buildup; it could've been tightened up quite a bit. However this is probably the fastest I've ever read a long book. So the flow is generally very effective.I don't want to spoil too much, but it's hard to describe without doing that. Sometimes his zombie thing works and sometimes it doesn't. It's most effective when describing his cat. I would say the highlight was the old man Jud's tale of Timmy Baterman; that was truly effective and eerie. By the final climax, it's predictable and off-and-on effective. He's most effective when he's using small details to set an ominous tone. The climax is over the top; it might have been more effective if the son had just been an eerie zombie and not a murderous one. Like others said, it almost becomes a "Chucky bloodbath".His use of pop culture references is effective, if over used. He's used that device before and generally it somehow grounds the atmosphere of supernatural into an everyday setting which is what King excels at. Also, he refers to death as "Oz, the Great and Terrible", based on a child's view of Death as a force. It's overused, but very effective; it fits in with his meditation on death as an ever-present unavoidable danger that we all fight but ultimately surrender to. This is a tale of not accepting death; someone said he could've put more profound thoughts into this but I think he does a pretty good job for a popular novel. I don't expect serious existentiality in a horror tale; he makes his points in a believable way through the eyes of his characters. One of his strong points is in illustrating a character's inner thoughts to really show the true horror. He's much better at this than a typical bloodbath ending.Speaking of characters, his two most effective are Jud the old man (even if it seems cliche of Wise Country Old Timer, it works) and the undead cat. They set the tone of dread and demonstrate compelling force that lurks in the Indian burial ground. I also liked his invocation of the classic monster, the Wendigo, even if its purpose was a little vague. He could've elaborated more on why it was there. There are some vague allusions to cannibalism that don't quite fit, even though he talks about cannibalizing one's grief and sanity. I guess it works but...Like others, I thought the scene of the funeral fight was over the top and unnecesary and lent an unintended slapstick to an otherwise serious story in which death was an everpresent malevolent force.King and some of his readers have said this was his scariest book; i haven't read much King so I can't say, but The Stand was much better at creating a very creepy tone of dread. Also, apparently he did this fairly early in his career-he shelved it for a long while- so it does showcase his talent pretty well. His pacing is impeccable and his skills for creating tension are tight. The grave digging and night scenes are pretty brilliant, as his wife and Jud's futile efforts to stop a morbid escapade.I also enjoyed the historical devices of Jud's tales of setting the history of the burial ground; it's such a cliche to say "Indian burial ground' in horror. So it helps to create a believable back story there. He actually gets away with using a well-worn device.Overall, it has very strong points and a somewhat predictable and disappointing end. As I said before, I would've preferred less of a blood bath and more of an eerie zombie ending. His creation of eerie zombies (as opposed to the brain-eating, Night of the LIving Dead kind) was very effective and chilling. It felt much more real than the movie stereotype.

I had seen the movie before I read the book so going in I thought I knew what to expect. But I was actually caught off guard and found myself loving the book more then I loved the movie. I still think the movie is good but this book is just... more. The characters in this book are just so complex. Each one of them feels real. One moment I am sympathetic with Jack a man who just can't seem to get a break. But the next moment I am scared of him and what he might do to his family. Wendy is also so much more complex. I found myself really interested in her and absolutely scared for her life.Danny though is my favorite. He's such a bright and sweet boy and it was interesting to get into his head. I loved to read how conflicted he got between protecting his family but also not wanting to upset them. I also really love his interactions with Dick Hallorann who is also very interesting.Overall this is an excellent creepy read.

if not forever.I stressed over what grade to give Transcend and ultimately gave it an Amazon **** grade (say, B+). Why that high? Why only that high? First, I'm an MD, PhD with 30 years of clinical practice and 10 years of medical research. (Google bobblum.com or just "Bob Blum")Ray Kurzweil was a classmate of mine at MIT in the sixties.I just met Terry at the Foresight Convergence Conference in 2008. I had read Fantastic Voyage, their first joint effort, several times and always had a hard time deciding whether to recommend it to friends and colleagues. 80% of Fantastic Voyage was first rate information. 20% was highly controversial, fringe medicine (alkaline water and obscure supplements). I complained to Ray in a letter expressing concern about his personal health - 250 pills a day is just too many, portending too many interactions - and also to Terry. My advice was to please label or rate the scientific evidence that forms a basis for each of their drug recommendations. Terry told me that their forthcoming book TRANSCEND would solve the problem. It DOES. Most of that controversial 20% has been surgically removed. Gone is much of the pseudoscience. What's left follows closely (and expands) the world according to Drs. Dean Ornish, Andrew Weil, and many other admirable health writers. The book summarizes the best of current medical advice on how to stay healthy. If you're not a health professional and have not read many books like this I would strongly recommend it. So, for most of you that's my advice... buy the book (and live by it). Now, I'll be more specific. TRANSCEND is a mnemonic for their health recommendations: Talk to your doctor, Relaxation, Assessment, Nutrition, Supplements, Calorie Reduction, Exercise, New Tech, Detoxification. That's a worthy list. In re: Talk to your doctor and Assessments. Much of this is a list of tests to request, and as they rightly state, many of these tests will not be covered by insurance. This means you will have hundreds of dollars in unreimbursed expenses for tests of unproven efficacy.During my meeting with Terry at Convergence he emphasized the importance of carotid ultrasound and coronary calcium scoring for men over 45 or women over 55. I totally concur. There is nothing like seeing the calcium plaque in your arteries to put the fear of the Lord into you. However, for many of the other tests (neurotransmitter levels, mineral analysis, digestive function, eg) it is unclear how often, if ever, the tests should be done. With the country's economy in tatters and healthcare already climbing toward 20% of GDP some of these tests will always be for the well-to-do, worried well. In re: Nutrition. I bristled when I saw that 66 pages were devoted to low fat recipes, since (IMHO) this is usually a worthless page-filler. However, I've changed my mind on this. In this era when so many foods that are readily available are condemned (most fats, much of animal protein, fast carbs) readers want to know "ok, so what DO I eat?"I actually made their soy yogurt Waldorf Salad, the quinoa, and the zucchini and have lost 3 pounds from my usually cerebrotonic, ectomorphic frame. Basically, folks, this is where to get your vitamins and minerals. As Mark Bittman (NY Times Food Critic) says, "it's the carrot, not the beta carotene." I single out for especial praise their Transcend Food Pyramid - they nailed it - veggies and water are the base. In re: Supplements. This is the arena in which Ray and Terry were particularly on thin ice in Fantasic Voyage. Ray's mammoth daily consumption of supplements to "reprogram his biochemistry" is notorious. I was delighted to see that their public recommendations for supplements have been greatly toned down. Whether this reflects a change in their own personal consumption is not stated. Since I'm a great fan of Ray's proselytizing on behalf of the Singularity, I hope it does. When I asked Aubrey (Engineered Negligible Senescence) de Grey (he of the Methusaleh beard) how many pills per day he takes (in contrast to Ray K's 250), he said "none. My wife is a good cook." And now, here's the key problem - no discussion of methodology for arriving at medical truth. It's called evidence-based medicine -Wiki it - and it needs to be a core piece of every book like this. Inquiring readers want to know, "should I take Resveratrol or alpha-lipoic-acid? How about CoQ10 or calorie restriction? Should I take vitamin E even though large clinical trials indicate that it might contribute to my death? The hundreds of references that were in Fantastic Voyage were a good thing - they must be there. Furthermore, it needs to be absolutely clear that many of the supplements that are still on their recommended list have only weak, inconclusive, or contradictory evidence. That Ray and Terry (and Andrew Weil) sell supplements is an obvious conflict of interest. They owe it to their readers to present all the evidence not merely that which supports the consumption of particular supplements. Again, I recommend this book, especially for the lay reader, since I endorse the TRANSCEND plan. My key reservation is that the presentation of evidence (con as well as pro) needs to be expanded and better referenced.Addendum (February, 2012): My personal diet and nutrition recommendations have departed fromwhat Ray and Terry recommend. Please see my essay "Optimal Nutrition: Are Fats Killers or Saviors?"on bobblum.com. That article includes scores of links to videos and pdfs on the web. Everything is free;I sell nothing. In another article on my website I also addressed the key issue of clinical evidence:how do medical scientists/ statisticians determine "Does Drug X Really Work?"Also see my short piece entitled "Transcend Drugs!" that shows exactly how the Natural Standard(THE authority on supplements) rates the supplements that Ray and Terry recommend in Transcend.

This is a good introduction to longevity medicine, and the view of future technology is insightful. Truly a bold and unique vision of what is to come in medicine. That said, the authors did not do their homework with their medical advice, but pretend that they have- this is troubling at best and dangerous at worst (this is coming from a practicing physician). Their advice to the reader is additionally tainted by their potential profit by the sale of supplements. I found this disappointing. For example, they recommend vitamin E, saying with confidence that it will reduce the risk of heart attack by 3/4. This advice is based on a single study that was published in 1996. There have been dozens of studies on cardiac risk and vitamin E, and it still isn't clear if it helps at all... And if it does the benefit is likely small, and there actually may be some risks to taking it which offset the benefits. The emphasis on supplements seems problematic in general. A healthy diet is the best medicine and should come first- and we know now that low sugar and high nutrition is the way to go. A pile of supplements without getting diet right is pointless. The advice the book gives regarding diet is partially correct, but they push low fat hard and this is not clearly supported by modern research either. A good number of studies support healthy high fat diets- fats are necessary to keep people healthy and help to stabilize blood sugars and weight. There are a number of excellent ideas in this book along with bad/false ideas. I could forgive false ideas proposed with caution and no secondary gain- but these ideas are given with a confidence that makes the whole work feel inauthentic and poorly validated. Sifting the good from the bad is hard work, and I wish they did more of that for us before publishing.

**Can't download or read on Android Devices. Out of maybe hundreds of books on Kindle, this is the first I've heard of this. Should have bold warnings somewhere that it's not compatible with Android. Which in itself is crazy, since the whole point of buying Kindle books is to be able to read in multiple devices. Did have a long list of devices which it is compatible with, "more devices" link showing a more devices that it is compatible with. Never expected the most popular OS would not be on the list and have never had this experience buying hundreds of books over the years. Can't cancel digital order since it's already "shipped" and has no option Waste of $10.

I’m not into candles but I got this book for my mother who loves candles. Since I have it, I decided to read it so I can relate with my mom. I can’t believe how concise this book is, perfect for my mom who doesn’t want to read complicated books. The author made sure that all topics covered and understandable. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. My mom is so happy making candles at her home now. She loves experimenting on scents and making personalized scented candles as her present. She now has a new hobby that keeps her busy. I’m so glad I took this book for my mom though I’ll have to make room for more candles.

I give this book three stars because it doesn't have colour photos to see what the waxes look like and the details of them. But it does explain how it's done so I can understand what to do.

Good read! Excellent starting point for a new hobby. I will be starting and trying some of the techniques in this book by next week. I am so excited! Richards, does a good job making this an easy and understandable read.

This "book" is junk. I can't believe Amazon allows this worthless nonsense to be sold. I seriously want my money back as this is clearly a scam. There is literally nothing useful in this "book". It contains no technical information or processes. Don't be fooled like I was. Avoid this junk

This book is a great guide to making your own candles at home. The instructions are easy to follow. There were lots of creative ideas for making decorative candles, including ice candles and using spray paints and glitter. If you are looking for a easy read on making your own candles, this is it!

I really got this book for the ice candle instructions. It has been 5 decades since I made one as a kid, and I want to do it again. I love candles and want to try making some for myself.

Short but I guess you don't really need more. The editing and organization is not the best. There are quite a few errors.

Read this in a day, mostly common sense and a great reminder for when your just starting . Good info

My father in law with dementia has declared this series to be the best he's read in his life. He can't follow a plot anymore, which is good because this book doesn't have one. It's definitely for people with cognitive impairments. It doesn't talk down to the reader, and it uses a normal adult vocabulary. My father in law reads the series daily. These books are expensive, and its easy to take a first glance and think that you got ripped off because the stories are so simple and devoid of conflict of any type. It is obvious that this series can't hold the interest of anybody without memory issues. However, if you keep in mind the intended audience, they are a gold mine. They bring my father in law enjoyment daily, and each day, for him, it's a fresh read. The pictures are nice, and the book does not indicate in any way that its for memory impared people. I wish there were more like it. He was an avid reader, and this allows him to continue to enjoy books.Just a quick heads up for anybody who is dealing with this kind of issue, we were able to use comic books and graphic novels until fairly recently. I'd try those first before jumping to these. Dick Tracy, Archie and Beatle Bailey comic collections had stories he could follow until fairly recently, when he lost the ability to use the pictures to give him clues to the story.

I work as an In-home Caregiver, primarily working with senior citizens living with Dementia. I am always looking for activities that are fun and cognitively stimulating for my clients. I loved the premise surrounding this book, one of several books on this "reading level" by this author. I was so very disappointed when this purchase arrived. The book is thinner than an elementary school child 's chapter book. The writing style is chapter book style. The print is an average (smaller) font. The paper used in this paperback is cheap and flimsy (not easy for elder fingers to turn.) The colorful picture MAY be colorful but it is hard to tell because they are so miniscule (approx. 3"x4") that they are hard to see. For the exorbitant price, I had hoped for an excellently developed product. Sadly, I had to return this book...too many flaws in user friendliness. Not worth the price.

Inspired by my mother's enjoyment of an Emma Rose Sparrow book I checked out of the library for her to read, I bought this one for her. It's the story of a woman who is encouraged by her daughter to try and find three things that are wonderful in each day.As she did with the book from the library, my mother loved this book, and even carried it to a doctor's appointment, like she used to before books became too difficult for her to handle. If you have a loved one who was an avid reader, but can no longer do so because of memory issues, these books are wonderful. I recommend buying hard copies, because a Kindle will be too hard to work after a while. One rather poignant benefit to having these books: they will never grow old in your loved one's mind. Each day, they will be new.

This is a short story split into several chapters and accompanied by full color pictures that actually go along with the story, which I really like. My nana loved the other chapter books I bought by this author, and now we have them all! She is still able to read short paragraphs on most days and I believe these books really complement the brain activities her doctor has her do to help with the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

My mother in law who has dementia in the middle stages loves this book. It's easy to read and understand, and she even left a note for me saying that it lifted her spirits on a day when she was down in the dumps. Hope there will be more books like this coming out.

A cute story with good humor. So nice for a senior who can't follow long text books. Was deeply enjoyed and I think, will be re-read many times!

My mom enjoys reading this book time and again. Finally a book she can read all the way through and not have to keep starting over because she forgets characters or story lines.

very enjoyable and pleasant for busy minds. slows a person down

#19,810 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I bought the 2019 version. If you are looking for expert recommendations in a concise and meaningful reference guide, do not buy this book.I’m a busy dad trying to get the most out of my Disney trip. This book is completely inaccessible as a reference guide. It’s nearly worthless. It’s a 800+ page tome that might have good recommendations buried in it somewhere between the pages and pages of unnecessary extrapolation, worthless quotes from other readers, and puffery about how Disney is ripping me off. This book stinks.

Our first trip to Disney was in the late 80s and the Unofficial Guide was my best friend. It gave me the information that made our trip a success. Of course, it was about 300 pages then. Now it’s over 800 and we have the internet. The guide, however, is the most comprehensive source for Disney World and it includes some good information on Universal Studios and Sea World. In addition to the astounding amount of detail, it offers advice from seasoned travelers to Disney World. It goes right down to the color of the carpet and drapes and when they installed.Even if you don’t need that level of detail, you ought to find adequate information to help in planning your trip. If not - the guide also gives you information on the highest rated travel agents that specialize in Disney World.

Every time we decide to go to Disney, the first thing I do is obtain the newest version of the Unofficial Guide. The first few trips it was crucial. If you don't have a battle plan (a more fitting name for the Touring Plans), you'll never survive Magic Kingdon. Seriously, the book tells you everything you need to know about the rides, the food, the transportation system, and many other vital areas. Most importantly, the book will SAVE YOU MONEY! It discusses and rates the resort hotels and the dining establishments for value. It explains the various tickets packages and the dining plans helping you to choose wisely whether a package deal is a good fit for your needs. Finally, if you've been multiple times in recent years and think you've got it down, Disney changes things. Fast Passes work differently. The dining plans have been tailored to fit more families' needs. You get the drill. I've been 33 times and I always learn something new that saves me money or time or stress.

I like that this book is impartial. The authors don't try to sell you on WDW, but tell you both side of the stories. After reading the introductory chapters, and reflecting on the needs of our family... we actually decided to cancel our reservation. Between the added parking fees, and the constant increase of prices, and the constant wait for everything... we decided the money would be better spent making multiple vacations exceptional instead of one exceptional week at Disney. If you want an impartial book that tells both sides of the story, I highly recommend this book. Added note: we have been to Disney before on our honeymoon... a lot has changed since then...

Much of the ranking for rides/attractions is way off. For example Star Tours ride gave some of the warnings but did not mention the sudden jerking of the ride. Listed seniors as over 4 stars and I hated it! I had to hold my neck and brace myself the whole ride. They gave the Pixar 3D at Epcot as NO STARS. My husband, myself & grandchildren all loved it! Pixar and Soaring are our favorites at Epcot. They showed no positive reviews for Hall of Presidents; just "nice place to nap" or "breastfeed"...so offensive!

I have purchased this guide several times over the past 20 years. No other guide compares to it. Everything you need to know about Disney World is in it. I like that they rate the rides from 1 to 5 stars, breaking it down to seniors, young children, teenagers, etc. It helps tremendously with planning a Disney trip.

I took time to read this book and I enjoyed this book. I learned several important facts and wrote down my own cheat sheet to use when I am at DW. This book has several good tips for the grand kids too. My wife has begun the recommended pre vacation walking routine in this book.

Comprehensive, complete, accurate, well designed, excellent! Really 4.8 stars, because it's not very pretty. If you want a pretty book get Birnbaum's guide: it's extremely beautiful. But this book is the one for people who want complete and really detailed information.
