Review
A New York Times Notable Book of the Year"Stranded in the urban battleground of Camden, New Jersey... Moore struggles against a crush of bullying, bigotry, and self-loathing. He chronicles his odyssey in this piercingly vulnerable memoir, ultimately finding his way to LGBTQ activism and 'black joy' through faith and family."―O Magazine"A staggering work that calls into question the truths we assume about ourselves and those among us."―Esquire"In his frank debut memoir, journalist Moore recounts his experience growing up a queer black man in Camden, New Jersey in the 1980s. Loved by his vibrant but argumentative family and ostracized by many of his peers, Moore grapples with the complexities of his growing faith and burgeoning sexuality and his own self-loathing and self-acceptance in his journey to becoming an activist and outstanding voice in the Black Lives Matter movement."―Harpers Bazaar"Darnell Moore is one of the most influential black writers and thinkers of our time--a beautiful, intentionally complex feminist activist writing liberatory futures. I cannot wait for the world to read No Ashes in the Fire."―Janet Mock, author of Redefining Realness and Surpassing Certainty"No Ashes in the Fire is part memoir, part social commentary. Darnell honestly tells his story with an intensity and passion that offers readers a deep understanding of a gay black male coming of age who open-heartedly claims his identity, and who embraces redemptive suffering. Ultimately, he reaches out to everyone with an inclusive love."―bell hooks"No Ashes in the Fire illuminates the fragility of black life no matter how much love surrounds it. As he grapples with social tragedy and the insecurity of black masculinity, Moore displays magnificent self-reflection. He narrates his story in a looping, lyrical style that approaches complicated truths through metaphor.... For Moore, these efforts often take the form of an empathy that borders on the transcendent."―Dawn Lundy Martin, Bookforum"A brutally honest investigation and interrogation of the stories [Moore] was taught to tell himself in order to live... The prose is immaculately spare and razor-sharp, honed to pierce the armor of our own role in upholding and telling similar stories. He pairs trenchant systemic analysis with interpersonal forgiveness, marking the ways those that sought to cause him pain and even death were first, possibly irrevocably, damaged by the same stories they were told in order to live... It's the stories we tell ourselves that need to burn. And with No Ashes In The Fire, Moore strikes a match."―Kevin Allred, INTO"No Ashes in the Fire is everything that is quintessentially Darnell Moore: brilliant, courageous, transparent, and wholly original. Moore's masterful writing feels like equal parts soul music and gospel testimony. With this book, Moore positions himself as one of the leading public intellectuals of our generation. More importantly, he has written a text that will inspire, and maybe even save, many lives."―Marc Lamont Hill, author of Nobody: Casualties of America's War on the Vulnerable, From Ferguson to Flint and Beyond"Darnell Moore is doing something we've never seen in American literature. He's not just texturing a life, a place, and a movement while all three are in flux; Darnell is memorializing and reckoning with a life, place, and movement that are targeted by the worst parts of our nation. He never loses sight of the importance of love, honesty, and organization on his journey. We need this book more than, or as much as we've needed any book this century."―Kiese Laymon, author of Heavy

Darnell's book is beautifully personal and transparent while neither salacious nor avoidant. Darnell has written a love story to Camden; a testament to loving our people as hard as we can, and the beauty of going in the direction of our dreams, (even when there is no light to illuminate our path). He writes of his journey as a young man navigating faith and sexuality. He writes of being raised by young parents who did the best they knew how, and he speaks to the power of education, and family as grounding forces, that can also provide wings. This book is a reminder of the importance of time and space to dream. No Ashes In the Fire has something for everybody and it is going to change lives- it already has.
Writing a life is a daring, daunting task. After all, how can one share the abundance of a life between a mere few hundred pages? Moore is well braced for the challenge. He’s a prolific journalist, and his writing has always impressed and inspired me. I began following his writing when he was at Mic. No matter the topic, he always wrote with the analytical skill of a historian, the awareness of an astute sociologist, and the heart of a compassionate being. Moore brings these very qualities to his memoir. He shares with us his family’s history, his city’s history, and his own; all of these things are tightly bound yet distinct. Moore grounds his analysis of the personal joys and sorrows of his life in his knowledge of the complexities of American marginalization. He’s always attentive to the wholeness of self and the wholeness of communities. Even as he unpacks the effects of anti-Black racism, neoliberalism, queer and trans antagonism, inequities in education, the ills of U.S. housing markets and so much more, he never forgets (and thus, never permits his readers to forget) that we’ve got to understand Black lives as full human lives first and foremost, not as lives solely impacted and entirely shaped by the effects of marginalization. Family, friendship, anger, rage, love, care and the lack thereof, confusion, determination, imbalance and so many other themes remain just as prominent as the larger, structural forces Moore describes. In this way, he does what Tayari Jones encourages writers to do. He writes about “people and their problems, not problems and their people.†Consequently, the resulting text is one that offers a window into Moore’s individual life, a window into the failures of the American promise, and a canvas for readers to see fragments of their own whole and fractured selves. This is a book about living—living in spite of, living because of, living in the midst of, and simply living fully.
As a radically inclusive white widowed grandmother, I found this book’s story re-liberating as Moore recounts his journey to a place of freedom in a world that powerfully works against him and his brothers and sisters all along the way. I applaud Darnell and all the others for their ability to overcome and work to make the world a much better place! I stand with you!
Darnell Moore masterfully and emotionally takes the reader back to his childhood. He writes like a painter each word a deliberate stroke of Genius. You can't help but be drawn into the world of child and grow with each page to understand fully who the man is. This is an excellent read. Old Camden comes alive. I understand what the title means; he went through the fire he was harden not destroyed since there was no ashes left behind. Do yourself a favor read this book.
I appreciated this modern intersection of journeys as Moore revealed his soul as someone both Black and Queer in America. Touching, compelling, and just a necessary voice. I think the writing itself will improve over time as the author hammers out his style more, specifically the time switches between different parts of Moore's life in the same chapter which I found slightly difficult to follow at times.
This book is riveting as Darnell shows us the many layers of his being. This is an introduction and invitation to look at the lives many in our black communities live. We all view the world through our own experiences, and cultural biases. This book helps us look through the glasses of an American black man and begin to understand the very different world he experiences.I hope this book will be used as a tool to open dialogues between people from many different backgrounds, to explain their experiences and differences so we can try to find common ground to work and live together with the freedom to be ourselves.
Darnell is a true story-teller. This read allows you to take the journey with him along the road to self-discovery and redemption that is the root of his internal revolution. This brother not only found himself but found his country, his soul and love. Excellent read!! Anyone who is on the path to a higher calling or a journey should read and appreciate this work.
Very compelling look at Moore's life in Camden NJ and his maturation as both a human and an activist. The portrait here is not glossy -- he shares the good and the bad. Definitely worth reading.
