This is the fifth of these miniature Star Trek items and I have loved them all...until this one. First off, the Tricorder you receive is blank, just a solid gray piece of plastic. You have to place all the stickers on your Tricorder from 2 sheets of included stickers. You are supplied with a diagram showing what goes where, which worked well for 6 of the 7 stickers. Be warned: you have to line everything up perfectly before you stick them on the plastic, once stuck you can not unstick them without causing damage! You need very steady hands and some fingernails to remove all the cut-outs. Nowhere in the product description does it say anything about having to put this together before you can use it, this is the first one of these in this miniature series of Star Trek goodies that I had to do anything other than remove the plastic battery tab. Now for the good stuff: you have to close the Tricorder and reopen it to make it do anything, but boy oh boy does it do stuff. Lots of cool lights and fairly loud sounds. I wish there was an on/off switch but there is not, you just let it run it's time out. Overall pretty cool once put together but not cool having to deal with the stickers.
I am quite happy with this item. I was not too fond of putting on the stickers myself in the beginning, but now that it is done I don't really mind. I didn't manage to get them on perfectly, but what I managed to get done will suffice. The best aspect of this product is its price. You just can't beat it. It is the most reasonably priced tricorder of its kind. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars was for the stickers and that it desperately needs a button to shut off and activate its functions. Despite these small issues, I certainly endorse this item to fans and the like. Happy Trekking!
I bought this for my husband as he's a big Trek fan and he loves scale models. He's also particularly fond of this model of Tricorder (Mark VI/Mark VII) as it was used throughout the Next Generation series. While this tricorder replica is actually only about 2/3 the size of the studio prop (making it useless for cosplay), the proportions appear to be accurate and for the size and price, the detail is pretty amazing... once you apply the stickers. Opening and closing the device even includes the "rachet" sound! My husband is happy with it as it makes an interesting display piece, particularly with the lights and authentic sound effects. The "kit" contains a booklet that is packed with information about the tricorder (both fictional and production info). For what it is, you really can't beat the price!
As others have mentioned, you do have to put on the stickers, which can be tricky, so put yourself back into your childhood when you did this kind of thing all the time, be careful and you will be fine. I did it and it looks really nice.. The sound and lights are great. My only real problem is that you can't really leave it open for display. Because I collect these miniature Star Trek items for display. So I took off a star.Otherwise, the look and sound of it once you are done is well worth the price.
This is a cute little Star Trek toy I got to add to my Halloween costume. Other than adding some stickers it's ready to go out of the box. It is a bit small, maybe half the size of a normal prop but for the price it's a good buy. The lights and sounds are also first rate.But...There's no off button. Opening the tricorder turn out the scanning sound and there is no way to silence it without closing it. So it you'd like to just show the toy you have to put up with the screeching and beeping.Maybe that's fine for you but I found it a serious problem.
Unlike what some other reviews have said, this is not a cheap piece of crap. It's not a full-size replica of a Mk VII tricorder from TNG, but it's also not over $100 like you'd pay for one. It's about 2/3 the size of a Mk VII, which is great for cosplay if you do what I'm doing, which is to say it's a Mk VIII...smaller, sleeker...a precursor to the Mk X (which is the same size as this product). It's fun putting the stickers on yourself, and reminded me of how toys used to be. Just be sure to have good lighting and a steady hand. I used tweezers so I could have more control. I also applied elmer's glue to the speaker holes, as it's quite loud for such a small toy. Now the volume is perfect.
this is so cool. we bought 2 as halloween props. we love trek, my husband and i have TNG uniform shirts that we have owned for 20 years, now our kids are enjoying with us. my son is wearing one of our shirts for halloween and i thought this would be a fun addition. holy cow it’s so cool. it’s small but perfect for his hand, he’s not quite 5’. and it’s perfect for my hand too. my husband is even going to use it with his costume and it’s a great size, he’s 5’10, if you are a super huge human this might be a little small for you but other than that it’s perfect. it makes cool tricorder noises, lights up when opened, and is really great quality for the “toy†price.
I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the dimensions. This tricorder is only 1/2 the size of the previous Playmates tricorders I bought years ago. Pretty good sound effects though.
