If you or a loved one has recently learned that you have chronic kidney disease, we know that you are going through a difficult time. Fortunately, as you will find in the pages that follow, by modifying your diet, you can do a great deal to not only help protect kidney function but also improve your overall health. Better yet, you can actually make your diet more pleasurable by adding foods that are a delight to eat. This book will show you how it’s done. The idea for this book took root several years ago, when Vicki received a devastating diagnosis of Alport Syndrome, a genetic condition that causes chronic kidney disease (CKD). Although the doctors stated that nothing could slow the progression of the disease, our research showed that good dietary choices and exercise could help protect the kidneys. Both of us began following a kidney-protective, heart-protective diet with wonderful results. Although the doctors had predicted that Vicki would need a transplant or dialysis within three years, it was six years before her kidneys failed, and during that time, she remained energetic and able to work full-time. At that point, Jennifer insisted on giving her mom one of her own kidneys. Surgery was easy for both of us, and recovery was fast. Afterwards, we continued our kidney-protective diet. What was distinctive about the diet we adopted? In addition to cutting out red meat and reducing the consumption of other meat, sugar, and processed foods, which place a burden on the kidneys, we added lots of fruits, vegetables, and other foods that can slow or stop the progression of CKD. We found that the easiest and most delicious way to incorporate these health-building foods in our diet was with smoothies. No other nutritious meal or snack can be made from scratch in only a couple of minutes, and none provides health-enhancing benefits in such a concentrated form. These one-mug wonders became one of the mainstays of our diet. They allowed us to maintain our busy schedules and keep involved in life while enjoying great taste. However, Smoothies for Kidney Health is more than a cookbook. It is also designed to help you understand both kidney function and kidney disease, and guide you in making smart lifestyle choices that can prolong the health of your kidneys and heart. Part One of the book focuses on the kidneys, their function and their dysfunction. Chapter 1 begins by reviewing the important tasks performed by the kidneys. It also discusses the common and often avoidable causes of CKD and the natural decline in kidney function that occurs as you age, as well as the partnership between heart and kidney disease. Chapter 2 explores the connection between CKD and diet. While CKD can have several causes, nearly 80 percent of all cases are the result of eating too much of the foods that contribute to type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity―common disorders that can lead to kidney disease. Chapter 2 ends with a discussion of whether we are setting our children up for CKD by establishing poor dietary habits. As you may already know, food choices directly impact kidney function. Based on the latest studies, Part Two further explores the connection between good food and good kidney and heart health. Chapter 3 first discusses the best diet for preserving kidney function and then examines the components of this diet that have healing properties. As you’ll see, antioxidants, phytochemicals, and fiber―found in whole fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and seeds―are natural disease fighters. (And what’s the easiest way to get these nutritional superheroes on your side? Smoothies!) If you’re already suffering some of the disturbing symptoms of kidney malfunction―acidosis and imbalances in potassium and phosphorus, for instance―you’ll probably want to learn how appropriate food choices can help alleviate these specific problems. That’s the focus of Chapter 4. An inset presents guidelines for people who still have some kidney function and want to preserve it, and a special section addresses people who have received kidney transplants and want to optimize the health and survival of their new kidney. By the time you reach Part Three, you’ll be ready for serious smoothie making. After Chapter 5 answers the question, “Why Smoothies?,” Chapter 6 provides valuable advice on choosing your smoothie ingredients and achieving blending success. Then, the remaining chapters present eighty delicious symptom-relieving smoothie recipes. The recipes have been divided into three groups to accommodate individuals who are at different stages of CKD and have altered dietary requirements. Chapter 7 includes forty-five smoothies for people who wish to avoid CKD, or who already have this disorder and want to slow or even halt its progression. The ingredients in these recipes are designed to help lower proteinuria; decrease blood pressure; reduce creatinine levels and estimated GFR (markers of CKD progression); and reduce acidosis, uric acid levels, and internal inflammation. Chapter 8 offers fifteen smoothies for people with more advanced CKD who must reduce their intake of phosphorus and potassium. At this point, individuals often struggle with food choices. The smoothies in this section make it easy to prepare delicious meals that support the kidneys and promote heart health. Chapter 9 includes twenty smoothie recipes for people on dialysis who have substantially restricted dietary requirements. These smoothies also offer soothing relief from several of the common complications of dialysis. Every recipe in Smoothies for Kidney Health is presented in a way that not only makes it easy to prepare a luscious meal without cooking, but also highlights that smoothie’s unique benefits. Each recipe begins by explaining how its carefully chosen ingredients contribute to kidney health and, in many cases, alleviate specific conditions like high blood pressure. Sent it back, not enough stage 3 kidney failure friendly recipes.

The problem w/ smoothies is too much fruit & not enough veggies. The smoothies do seem to be good & the potassium, phosphorus, calcium, etc levels for each recipe are very nice to know for which recipes are appropriate for each CKD stage. Almost all the recipes are very fruit heavy & veggie light, but that's pretty much the case for most smoothies I guess. That being said, my concern is sugar levels & that has been left out of the equation. There was mention that the sugar is naturally occuring in the fruits & not added sugar, & that sugar is somehow offset or managed in a way by higher fiber content. Ok, yeah, that may be true, but I don't think IMO that a person can use these fruit heavy recipes as the bulk of their diet or there will be a sugar problem. That being said, these do look like healthy smoothies, & I didn't get the impression that the authors are saying to make this exclusively your whole diet. If they are incorporated into a varied diet, then yes, this can be a helpful book. Especially when a patient is uninterested in food & feeling too sick to eat. There are times these smoothies could be helpful & they do give you the breakdown on how much of certain things you're ingesting in each smoothie that are crucial to CKD w/ just the exception of sugar content from the fruit. I suppose that if a person really wanted to have a smoothie based diet, they could use the few veggie heavy smoothie recipes ( yes there were a few) as the bulk of what they drink, w/ the wide selection of fruity recipes only as treats for some variety. There's an easy to follow explanation of the stages of CKD which would be helpful to new patients, families, or friends of the patient to get a basic quick understanding of why phosphorus, sodium, calcium, & diet are crucial. It's actually a fairly good book depending on how you look at it. It is a warning to healthy people to take care of their kidneys BEFORE it's too late & why our food choices matter so much while we still have a choice.

As a regular smoothie book, there are many flavorful recipes. To use as a source for kidney health is questionable, as many of the ingredients are listed as foods to avoid, such as beets, spinach, nuts, and avocados. I am sending this back, as I don't want to exacerbate the problems I am having.

I really wanted to like this book. I only bought it for the recipes but there were only 2 recipes I could use as my friend who has CKD can not have foods high in Potassium and many of the foods in the smoothie are very high in potassium and unable to eat such as yogurt, spinach, kale, orange juice, bananas and so on. Very disappointed in book. returned it immediately for a full refund. You can search online for smoothies for renal failure and get a better list with foods we can actually eat. Disappointed

Smoothies are great and these smoothie recipes are especially delicious! I’ve tried eleven recipes, but have four favorites to which I keep returning. But the best gift of this special book is the beginning where the authors have written an easy to understand description of how our kidneys work and how, specifically, the health of the kidney contributes to feeling well or feeling sick. Having chronic kidney disease can be disempowering for one who has it given that there is no current cure. Over time it can lead to clinical depression. Information in this book counteracts that by emboldening its reader. There’s a strength-based focus of what one can do to make a difference in how they feel and the state of their health. The section on “slowing kidney damage with produce” is empowering and revolutionary in that it gives specific ways people with progressive kidney disease can actually slow its progression. Those qualities make this smoothie book not just an invitation to the delicious, but also a pleasure to read, to use, and to refer to again and again while maintaining a healthy kidney life. It's packed with dozens of simple recipes for delicious and beautiful smoothies that everyone will enjoy. My partner has kidney disease, and watching what we eat is one way I can support her in her quest for a long and healthy life.Not just a collection of recipes, the first half of "Smoothies for Kidney Health" is a treasure trove of helpful information about kidney health and nutrition. (Did you know that 100% fruit juice is NOT good for kidney health??) Browsing this section will make you feel like an expert on the most important aspects of how kidneys work, how to protect them, and what to avoid.Recipes fill the second half and are presented in a sort of "For Dummies" format - one to a page with ingredients listed in large black type on a white background that my 65 year-old eyes can easily handle. Each includes a tempting description of the smoothie, the list of ingredients and mixing instructions, a clear table of nutrient values, and a little bit of the science about why the smoothie is good for you.Recipes are grouped for folks with different needs, including one for those on dialysis. One recipe in that group, "Red Velvet Chocolate Delight", includes raspberries, pineapple, and cocoa. Yum!!! Maybe the next edition can include little scratch-n-sniff panels. :)Grab a copy of this cornucopia of useful information and tasty delights for your own collection and another for someone you know who's living with kidney disease or its precursor, diabetes.

Living with chronic kidney disease is stressful. I spend a lot of time worrying about how what I'm eating is affecting the health of my kidneys and my overall health. Hulett and Waybright's book helps take the guesswork out of what I can eat (or drink, rather, as it's a smoothie recipe book). It's informative and the recipes are creative, healthy AND delicious!
