Review

"Every once in a while, a cookbook comes along that simply knocks me out. The new book...is from L.A.-based wife and husband team Zoe Nathan and Josh Loeb, who own Huckleberry Bakery and Caf? in Santa Monica, as well as Milo & Olive, Sweet Rose Creamery, and Rustic Canyon. Their book is filled with wonderful tips about life and baking but what inspires me most is that I want to make every single recipe in this book! The beautiful photographs draw you in and the recipes are both rustic and elegant- plus, they're easy to make. Next for me, Baked Apples with Oat Crumble - the ultimate comfort food with a modern twist!" -- Ina Garten, The Barefoot Contessa"What I love most about Zoe is that she's neither afraid to be too casual nor too picky about the final product and somehow manage to find a hilarious balance amidst the madness, like a true teacher. From one down-home American baker to another, her balance of creating from the humored heart and nurturing soul is one that is instinctual and inspiring. "- Christina Tosi, chef/owner and founder of Momofuku Milk Bar and author of Momofuku Milk Bar"This book is Zoe's uber-personal and uber-delicious celebration of her passion and love for cooking and baking. I want to eat every gorgeous recipe and play hooky in her kitchen (especially if I can stay for staff meal)! - Suzanne Goin, chef/restaurateur and author of The A.O.C. Cookbook and Sunday Suppers at Lucques"I love what Zoe Nathan has crafted at Huckleberry, from the ridiculously delicious salted caramel squares to the Brisket Hash. An extraordinary bakery-one of my favorites-and now a delicious book, too."-Elijah Wood, actor"Huckleberry by Zoe Nathan is an all-around stunning book. From the immaculate food photography to the craving-inducing recipes to the yellow polka-dot pattern adorning the pages, Huckleberry is everything you could hope for in a bakery cookbook - and then some. Nathan's witty stories bring you right into the heart of her kitchen, and it's easy to feel like she's unlocked her bakery doors for you and invited you in for a tour." - FoodNetwork.com"Here you'll find a hearty helping of Zoe Nathan's generous approach to baking-a rare balance of comfort and craft with attitude."- Chad Robertson, co-owner of Tartine Bakery and author of TARTINE BOOK NO. 3"From the ingenious Tips and Secrets at the beginning to the Apologies (instead of acknowledgments) at the end, this bright, funny, sumptuous collection of (mostly) breakfasts and pastries, conjures the happy morning you imagine eating this food. Zoe Nathan's love for rustic, delicious food pours forth from the pages. Already a staple in my house." - Gwyneth Paltrow, actress, lifestyle guru, and author of It's All Good"Filled with entertaining behind-the-scenes stories and technical tips relayed in plain English, this cookbook will thrill meticulous bakers and Huckleberry's devotees." - Library Journal"...a breakfast book that has you cheering for Nathan and her story and her food before its first recipe; you'll be hugging it, unironically, by the end. It's full of photos that toe the food porn-line but dismount squarely on the classy side, Mary Lou Retton-Style. Her recipes feel familiar (many a muffin, scone, cake, fruity baked thing, and brunchy egg dish), but they're somehow more. They are unfussy but still special, still at home in a book whose fore-edge design is a bright canary yellow with white polka dots." - food52"[Nathan's] first cookbook covers foods from Huckleberry, both sweet and savory, healthy and indulgent. It also happens to boast possibly the most drool-worthy cover of all 2014 releases, shot by photographer/blogger Matt Armendariz." - Eater

Maybe I am the odd person out in that I don't go to Huckleberry for the bakery goods but rather for their delicious salad and sandwich offerings, so I was hoping to see more of those in this book since the description cites savory foods. Even so, those that are included are delicious, especially if you like finding new ways with eggs.A few specifics: even though avocado toast has been a staple in my family for decades, Huckleberry's Smashed Avocado Toast with Hard-Boiled Eggs and Anchovy Dressing takes it to an insanely delicious new level. My son would say that that recipe alone is worth the price of this book. Fortunately, there are quite a few more than that. The Vegetarian Croque is wonderful as are the frittatas. The Polenta with Roasted Asparagus, Crispy Prosciutto and Egg is quite good without the polenta! Next, I'm looking forward to tackling the house-cured salmon. This is a beautiful cookbook. Tons of photos of the food as well as instructional photos. Hopefully the next one will have more of the salad and sandwich recipes I was expecting.

I'm a professional baker. I'm always dumbfounded people review cookbooks without having tried a single recipe. So I wanted to try a few before reviewing. We use adapted recipes from a variety of different cookbooks everyday at the bakery where I work. I was stoked to get this cookbook because I also trust Ina (and love Elijah Wood!), and the fact that Zoe trained at Tartine which is all the rage right now... But sadly, something is way off with these recipes. The chocolate chunk muffins are NOT okay. The chocolate glazed donuts were a disaster. Soggy fried mess. (We make donuts at the store every Sunday). The maple bacon biscuits were flavorful but pretty dense. They were scones really. (Yes, I know how to make a biscuit and the count was super off for what they said to make). Two stars rather than one because I do love the stories. They did a good job making it personal, a real glimpse into a bakery. And the lemon cornmeal cake came out perfect. The hippie apple muffins were good. Also know that the muffin recipes that do come out are like birthday cake rather than a muffin texture. I'm not sure if they use flours with different moisture content and they're not super up front about that. I don't know. But I don't have disasters with Ina's recipes. Ever. I've not had any disasters like this in a long time. With that said, I'm sure everything at the actual bakery is delicious. But aside from the lemon cornmeal I am super bummed with these recipes.

Even though this book is lovely and has a lot of amazing recipes I can't wait to try, there are some errors. For the blueberry brioche (pg. 108) the weight measurement does not correctly correspond to the volume measurement. It calls for 1 cup + 2 Tbsp of AP flour and equates that to 280 grams. That's incorrect. Same mistake is done for the bread flour (1 cup + 2 Tbsp does not equal 280 grams). I always follow weight measurements, I wish I had checked the volume measurement prior to doing so. It was a dry disaster, wasting over 4 cups of flour and 4 eggs.1 cup + 2 Tbsp is about 140 grams. I made it over using 140 grams of AP flour and 140 grams of bread flour and it worked. Check recipes prior to starting to ensure weight and volume measurements equate.I also wish there was perhaps a little more explanation for temperatures. Should eggs be brought to room temperature? And how warm is slightly warm milk? Type-A personality kicking in here. Just some minor issues, but overall lovely book. Glad I purchased it. Can't wait to try some other recipes. Hope this helps!

Wow. I was so excited about this book. The chocolate chunk muffins look beautiful in the book, so I decided to make them this morning. Twice. The first time, I followed the recipe to an absolute T. The results were nothing less than disastrous. (I posted a picture below. This was after I had to remove half the batter from the muffin cups because of the overflow.) I make hundreds of muffins a week, and have never seen results like this. I decided to try again because I was determined to have chocolate chunk muffins. This time, I used half the amount of yogurt, and did not use a mixer like the recipe says to do. They turned out better, but still sunk in the middle. The taste was decent, but they looked terrible. The texture is super light and airy, not dense like you would expect from a muffin. Waste of money on the book, and on ingredients. Now I am to afraid to try anything else in the book. Ridiculous.

The pictures are beautiful, the recipes inviting but the mistakes are unforgivable ! Baking is like chemistry really no room for error ! It is hurtful to waste expensive chocolate, butter, flour and eggs making muffins that are so bad they go in the trash. I want to love this book but I will not bake anything else in this book. I will move on to breakfast items with the hope I do not discover any mistakes. I hope someone edits future editions and makes corrections. Heartbreaking !

Review

“Frase injects a sorely needed dose of reality to the conversation, and the result is invigorating … I lost sleep over it.” —Ben Tarnoff, Guardian “An engaging thought experiment on the intersection of technology and the environment. Indeed, as we ponder the interplay between digital abundance and physical scarcity, the digital industrialist solutions of most thinkers in this space pale in comparison to Frase’s more open-minded, less deterministic understanding of the future unfolding before us.” —Douglas Rushkoff, author of Program or Be Programmed and Present Shock “A remarkably clear-eyed view of the futures we’re facing, bringing humor and intelligence to the lab of speculative fiction to create four smart and sharply lit early warning signals.” —Warren Ellis, author of Gun Machine and Transmetropolitan “Are the robots eating our jobs? Will technology set us free? These questions aren’t new, but Frase’s approach to answering them is refreshingly inventive. Four Futures is a thought-provoking work of political speculation. This incisive little book offers the vital reminder that nothing is set in stone—or silicon—and that in order to fight for a better world we first need to be able to imagine it.” —Astra Taylor, author of The People’s Platform “Brexit looms. Trump leers. Populism shouts. Reactionary politics casts long shadows. The right and left tear at themselves and stretch outwards. International tensions simmer. This seems like an appropriate moment for re-envisioning, and contributions to this process are arriving at some pace. Peter Frase’s engaging short book is another addition to this collective reimagining.” —David Beer, OpenDemocracy “Frase deserves great credit for illuminating the possibilites our politics, technology, and environment now enable and constrain. Simultaneously entertaining and deep, Four Futures should inspire more ‘social science fiction.’” —Frank Pasquale, Commonweal“Takes the practice of speculation and puts it to powerful use on the questions of automation and climate change.”—Red Pepper

In "Four Futures", Peter Frase argues that 21st century Capitalism, haunted by the specters of ecological catastrophe and automation, is in a contradictory dual crisis. Ecological catastrophe generates problems of scarcity, while automation generates the problems/promises of abundance. For Frase, it is the interaction of these two opposed dynamics that make our historical moment full of both promise and danger. We can neither return to a "Fordist" past, nor hold on to neoliberal capitalism. For Frase, something new is coming, and as Rosa Luxembourg said, it is either a "transition to socialism or regression into barbarism."Frase's speculative writing is not a secular eschatology setting a firm end date to capitalism. Following the sociologist Wolfgang Streeck, he warns against viewing abstractions like "capitalism" and "socialism" as social systems with discrete endings; a mistake too many socialists and apocalyptic preachers have made. In sketching out possibilities rather than likelihoods, Frase takes automation as a constant, with ecological crisis and class power as variables. This model posits that, depending on contingencies and political developments, we can end up in a world of either scarcity or abundance, alongside either hierarchy or equality. Such a typology leaves us with the possibility of Communism (Abundance & Equality), Socialism (Scarcity & Equality), Rentism (Abundance & Hierarchy), or Exterminism (Scarcity & Hierarchy). Frase dedicates a chapter to each of these futures, and in each chapter emphasizes a key theme that is relevant to the world we live in now.Unlike other publications on such topics, which have become an entire sub-genre in recent years, "Four Futures" emphasizes the importance of politics, particularly a politics of class struggle. As a result, Frase avoids the technocratic-utopianism of books like "The Second Machine Age", and certain strands of Accelerationism, which are part of a larger 21st century philosophical movement known as "Speculative Realism". Avoiding the nihilist fatalism of the Left, what philosopher Slavoj Žižek has called a Left-Fukuyamaism, Frase successfully writes a work of "speculative social science", presenting Dystopias that function as critique and Utopias to build towards.

In Four Futures: Life After Capitalism, Peter Frase uses metaphor from popular culture, for example, Star Trek, to describe what life might look like after capitalism, whether we evolve into each future or have it thrust upon us on two axis: equality v. hierarchy and abundance v. scarcity.Communism is equality and abundance. He does not specify how this will look exactly, but he uses a citizens dividend as a possible route to get there (the dividend gives labor a higher supply cost for work, which raises wages and increases abundance as everyone can buy what they need or maybe, if people don't work, less of what they want but don't need).Increased automation is a possibility I see here, which would give us the same amount of stuff for less work. There is also the problem of professional slaves, like doctors and especially nurses, who are needed and cannot be automated away. They will begin to resent an idle nation, as would soldiers or astronauts. There is also the question of whether the dividend was just for adults or will be adjusted for family size. We already have one just for the kids, but it is about twelve sizes too small and some only collect it at year's end rather than when needed at every paycheck.Rentism is hierarchy and abundance. The key feature of this future is ownership of intellectual property, both for production and consumption (from branding to bioscience). This also includes land rent paid by the many to the few. I support an ownership alternative, where workers own the means of production of their company, including intellectual property. You could use social insurance collections to buy employee companies, with the contribution equalized so each employee gets the same amount of stock per period.Going back to the abundance problem, I would develop in-home agriculture (hydroponics and growing meat from stem cells). These homes would be expensive, so the cooperative would give you no interest loans to buy them and may even build them for you. These cooperatives would buy the land and hold it for their members, solving the problem of land rent. I would also keep the benefits of creating intellectual property closer to the actual developers rather than giving them to the capitalists and their pet CEOs. You will get more innovation, not less.Socialism is where equality meets scarcity. Eco-socialism, which Joel Kovel proposed in his 2000 run for president, falls into this category. Basement agriculture in cooperative built homes could also be a solution here - one that involves government less (although NASA is developing the whole habitat angle, or was, for a mission to Mars). Running out of resources is the theme to this future, although I still think Mathus was wrong. We will always figure out how to grow food, clean water and air and deal with floods (and maybe even control carbon) and will use government, industry and cooperatives to do so. Currently, there is no urgency, however, because enough of the middle class has been bought off with their toys and wages to ignore the urgency of upcoming scarcity. Socialism is never to be seen as a permanent state - it is the road to eventual communism and abundance. If cities can rise out of the Arabian dessert, most anything is possible in dealing with scarcity. The problem is scarcity of distribution, not of actual resources.Exterminism is where hierarchy meets scarcity. In this future, the elite separate themselves from society and let society begin to dies off or be killed through prison, police violence, war, environmental disaster (see Flint) and cutting welfare benefits. The evidence that this is happening now is hard to dispute. Indeed, Trump seems to champion Muslim exterminism. Zero population growth, rather than dealing with scarcity is a way to keep poor people from breeding - more exterminism. How do we fight this? Blow the whistle and increase that Child Tax Credit that I mentioned above. In cooperatives, every member is in an enclave and every person could be valuable. There are many under-educated geniuses out there who have been given poor educations because of their darker skin. Just look at the drug trade. These are complex enterprises. Recruiting everyone ends scarcity. My impression in reading this book is not that these are four discrete futures, but four trends that are going on simultaneously. The conclusion of the book states exactly that. Now that we know, we can start doing something about it.

I have bought several copies of the book to share with friends and my granddaughter. This is an excellent book which lays out four possible scenarios to contemplate the future. It is a very readable and thoughtful book. The author has a good grasp of Marxism and unlike many Marxists knows how to apply Marxist ideas to the problems we are facing today. The author adds humor and examples from popular culture which makes the book very readable. As the author states, "I hope to reclaim the long left-wing tradition of mixing imaginative speculation with political economy." I think he does this very successfully. The author's idea to decommodify labor and have a universal basic income are compelling ideas for the future.

Nice work, exploring four scenarios for the future, which of course are already present in society just not widely distributed. Compelling, references to different science fiction; distopias and utopias bolster his arguments and make the work very accessible. Its very clear which of the 4 futures makes sense to Peter, and to me so if you are looking for an unbiased view - this isn't it.

It's a bit scattered and surface level - the scenarios are barely sketched out and then go so quickly on tangents that at first I was confused and expecting deeper discussions of scenarios until I realized I was almost done with the book. There are some interesting references and it's a short read, so maybe worth taking a look.

I found this very thought provoking and logically laid out. The author does not try to predict a specific future but rather lays out various factors and four extemes, with the reality being probably some blend of them.

(RabidReads.com)So far, the Boundary Magic trilogy has been a very entertaining listen for me. I’ve not read a lot of witch books, but the type of witch that the main character is was a new one for me. Very unique.Lex is a boundary witch, a war veteran, and a wonderful aunt to her deceased twin sister’s baby girl. She’s also working for the head vampire of Colorado and seeing where things go as far as a relationship with Quinn, a vampire she partners with. It’s Halloween night when Lex realizes that members of the supernatural community of Boulder are acting a bit(or a lot) “off”. Things that shouldn’t happen, are happening. Witches are all high strung and wired up. Werewolves are coming into places that are forbidden to them. Ghosts are not only showing up, but are able to be seen and heard clearly in some instances. Vampires are partaking in blood in an open environment among humans. And an ancient evil is unearthed-literally-and is now eating humans. Nerd(but handsome) witch Simon and his sister Lily also feature prominently.I am finding these books to be really fun. They are not comedy, but there is some humor, some really great characters, and a creative premise. The villain(ancient evil) this time was really unique and nicely fleshed out by the author. Of course, there is also more than one villain for Lex to come up against. I enjoyed a really fun scene between Lex and a ghost of a madame from a bordello of the past. Actually there were several fun scenes with other supernatural characters, the werewolves become helpers at one point, and another rare kind of witch is brought into the fray. But none of the other witches are as rare as Lex. She’s known as a death witch of sorts. She can bring back someone that is dying or has just died, and can cause the death just as easily. She’s still learning her powers, but at least she didn’t kill all the fish in a pond this time. The best part is that she can’t really die. If so, she would never have made it out of childhood after drowning. Of course, beheading would do the trick.Narration? I am enjoying listening to this series, although I also own the eBooks. Kate Rudd narrated all three books and I can’t imagine anyone better for this character. She deftly handled both the female voices and did really well with the male voices. I really appreciate a narrator that can do male voices without me being taken out of the story by a really bad effort. So I was really happy with this narrator and wouldn’t hesitate to listen to anything else she narrates. Narration for me was 5 stars out of 5.I would classify this as urban fantasy, although she is having a relationship with Quinn that is still new. Things did heat up for them in this installment, some details, but nothing explicit. And that was fine with me. More explicit wouldn’t have bothered me either, so either way it was good. Lots of action also contributed to this story and kept me on the edge of my seat at times while reading.Highly recommended to urban fantasy readers and paranormal romance fans would probably enjoy this as well.

I still love Lex. She’s tough and actually handling all the dramatic changes relatively well. When she aligned herself with the vampires she somehow managed to separate herself even more from the witches. It probably works out better for Lex, though, because all the supernatural factions are going through some issues of the magical variety. The short story that takes place in between books really sets the stage for Lex’s future run-ins with werewolves, which factor prominently in this book. They really bring home the point that werewolves are just like humans – the bad ones can be bad and the good ones can be good. They all just suffer through the same “curse.” Also, yuck, there’s a really yucky big bad that’s up to no good (as if they need more bad to hunt).I’m not sure what to make of the romantic element in this story. I much prefer Lex to be independent and awesome on her own without having all these entanglements. Maybe that’s what we’ll ultimately get? I hope so, because I don’t really want another Scarlett situation. I also much prefer Lex’s way of handling strange situations without a partner. Watching her figure things out using her experience and intelligence is more satisfying than the “phone a friend” option, in my opinion.

I really enjoyed this book. It is well written, smooth flowing and easy to read. It kept me captivated from the first page through the last. Once I started the book I couldn't put it down. The author does a great job portraying the characters, their emotions and the experiences they go through.Lex now knows she is a boundary witch and works for the Vampire in charge of the state, Maven. All the sudden at Samhain (Halloween), the supernatural people in Boulder start acting weird. She first notices with the witches, then others. Extreme measures are going to have to be taken to find out what is causing the problem and what to do about it.Tensions are already high between the witches and vampires. Witches had to agree to give up their Apex magic and serve Maven for 20 years when she agreed to help take out the werewolf alpha who was destroying and torturing his wolves and others. That path was made 13 years ago. Since then, there are no werewolves in Colorado. This book is full of mystery and suspense. I highly recommend it.

Another great book by Melissa. I liked the turns to the plot and the dynamic of the characters. Melissa introduces a nearby werewolf pack into the plot, and explores Lex's feelings (and prejudice) against werewolves. Lex is clearly still trying to come to terms with being a part of the Old World, and has clearly not fully adopted her station at the beginning of the book. The Old World is still those "other" people, not entirely realizing that she is now part of that "other". I was a little surprised to see Lex get over her prejudice towards werewolves so quickly, but then again, it's not like she had built up years of habit hating them.We see further development of Lex as a witch and a player in the Old World, and like Scarlett, coming into her own. Lex's comfort with her powers grow, and she begins thinking about how she wants to play her situation, given the few options she has. Lex shows a bit more diplomacy than we might have come to expect from a PTSD veteran dealing with newfound witch powers. We gain a better understanding of what a boundary witch is, and what she can do, through Lex's journey and contact with a boundary witch's ghost. We get a little romance, a lot of tension, a little drama, and further insight into the other characters surrounding Lex's new life. This was a fun read.

This book really wasn't what I was looking for at all. There is a lot of instruction on different dying techniques, but very little on cloth manipulation to achieve specific shibori effects.

I'm coming from the point of someone who knows a bit about shibori, has some experience dyeing on various fibers using various techniques. I have a degree in textile design so I probably know a bit more than your average joe. This is a decent overview of shibori. It covers various types, and does a brief section on each technique and shows pictures of the various steps. The photographs are well done and the instructions are clear. The author covers both acid dyes (silk- protein fibers) and fiber reactive dyes (cotton, cellulosic fibers) but sort of jumps around alternating techniques in silk and cotton. The author never goes into detail about the dyes just sort of gives this weird general information..so she might talk about illuminating dyes but only for silk...which leaves you wondering if there is an equivalent for cotton. She really focuses on the resists-- so if you have never dyed fabric before this book will not give you much technical information by way of ratios and recipes, but you can easily find those things online. The author/publishers were trying to hit all the marks for the average hobbyist but it just sort of grazes them instead. I learned a few things I did not know such as capping with cellophane (can't find the book right now i'm going from memory) but I honestly wish I had just spent the extra money to get the more serious books. I certainly didn't get any real tips on what might go wrong in a project-- you would have no idea what happened if you did stitched shibori and lost your design-- which happens! Qualities of dye and cloth, working with thickened dye are all things that would have been great if she had gone in to just a LITTLE bit of detail about. So I can't really recommend the book if you are looking for serious technical information.

Just hosted an indigo dye party (Sip & Dip) with a few friends. This book was passed around several times for new dying techniques. Using the wood squares and popsicle sticks from the indigo kit created new designs. Next year, we will have pvc pipe for even more wonderful Shibori creations!

I was trying to figure out if learning Shibori was something that would interest me. In reading this book, I loved how the basics of a handful of Shibori techniques were taught in a wonderfully simple manner with stunning results.Would I buy it again, if I had a redo? I think so! It has definitely simplified learning some of the techniques of Shibori, and peaked my interest in learning some more, without overwhelming me with lots of pictures without instructions like another Shibori book I ordered at the same time.

Very useful and inspiring contents. It widened my knowledge of resist dyeing, and I enjoyed experimenting with techniques.

Good pics and instructions. This along with Shibori and Surface Design Workbook can launch you into a wonderful experience. I'm a beginner and I'm very glad that I have this resource.

I was first drawn to Shibori from a book that jumped off the shelf at me in an art supply store a few years ago. I didn't know how I could actually learn to do them and circumstances were such that I didn't follow up on beginning, but deep down I knew I would eventually begin working with these techniques. This book has offered that opening - pictures aplenty with instructions under each. I'm visually oriented, and this helped alot! Her directions are primarily for the beginner, and have me wanting to advance. I'm glad I bought the book.

Very basic book. but has useful information with big, colorful pictures. Most of the information can be found on the internet but it is handy to have it one place.

This book is absolutely adorable - I plan on ordering the rest. Baby isnt here yet, but heck my husband and I were entertained for about 30 mins playing with it together so, worth it no matter what *laughs*.

This is a really small book. It's cute but you're basically poking a finger from the back and awkwardly turning pages over your finger. I'll stick it in my granddaughter's stocking but I don't think it will become a favorite.

So cute, my grandbaby loves these

My granddaughter loves it!!

Nice

Great little book! Will likely order more from the series

Favorite first book for baby

My grand daughter loves the finger books. I have to read them over and over again.

All is not solved in this second book of the High House Ursa as another bear shifter, Kincaid, gets drawn into it and Haley, the human accountant that does the accounting for the High House. She accuses Kincaid of stealing which has the shifter reeling as well as the rest of the House. She is asked by the Queen to help him find evidence of his innocence, which leads to the two spying and breaking a lot of rules that Haley has a hard time adjusting to. When time runs out for them, will they have enough evidence to clear him.Another great instalment in this series and there is more to come, which I can’t wait for. Not my usual type of read but I enjoyed it thoroughly, the banter, the story, which almost makes me believe in shifters, vampires and magic. I liked the banter between them but I didn’t warm up to Haley till more than half way through the book. She was a bit too stubborn and a bi***, no matter what her reasons were but Kincaid I loved, the strong, yet gentle bear. I loved the fact that once the knew what they felt, they didn’t beat around the bush or run away from it.*I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*

Because the attack was centered on mages, the danger was greater due to pressure sensors on the roof and other difficult-to-detect wards and spell defenses that only another magic user could sense. But unfortunately Kincaid, head of High House Ursa’s operations in the European theatre, didn’t have a true magic user available to him. Instead, his Queen had sent Kvoss to help him – and they had never gotten along. The rogue mage, Samuel Girard, was pinned down and trapped in the building they were preparing to enter. Kvoss, using magic through artifacts since he had no magic himself, prepared the scene for battle so that humans would not see what was happening, and Kincaid led the attack. Apparently their target was more powerful than they were told which made their assault even more difficult. In a brilliant move, Kincaid told his men to throw any object that was currently on fire onto the mage who had a magic shield protecting him. It kept the objects off of him, but he could not defend and be protected from his own magic and the sparks from his magic fires burned him and distracted him from maintaining his shield. Both Kvoss and Kincaid used their weapons against him and the mage was defeated. They cleaned up the scene and Kvoss and Kincaid were called back to Ursidae Manor by the Queen. The Queen was presenting Kincaid to the men in power and asking them to make him a Title Holder, allowing her to then appoint him to the position of Hunter. He would also need a mate in this role and would be imbued with magic to enable him to locate mates for unmated Title Holders they were trying to replace to restore the power. The House positions had to be filled as quickly as possible to face the dark that was to come.Queen Kaelyn had asked the accounting firm to check the books after the recent traitorous uprising. Haley Meynard found ten thousand dollars which had been taken from the House account, moved around suspiciously, and put into Kincaid’s account. The Queen knew this was a setup and ordered Haley to work with Kincaid to find out who really stole the money and clear Kincaid’s name. It was very obvious traitors were still trying to block the bears loyal to the Queen from accepting the new positions, and she would not allow that.Haley was convinced of Kincaid’s guilt, but he insisted he was innocent. And then the facts began to support his claim of innocence! Haley was in a world she didn’t understand. But working with Kincaid drew her closer to him. Would they be able to find proof in the short time the Queen gave them to find the truth? She could not stall for too long, and she could not appoint him without that proof of innocence. And Haley was beginning to have feelings for Kincaid. What would she do about that??I really love this series. This book was even better than the first and will draw the reader right into the exciting, fast-moving story line. The characters are strong and decisive, worthy of respect. With loyal subjects being so critical now, it is crucial to protect the Queen’s choices in rebuilding her key positions. Dive into this wonderful series and see how the traitors will be identified and dealt with! It will be a difficult task!

Moby-Dick (Macmillan Collector's Library), by Herman Melville

About the Author

Herman Melville was born in 1819 in New York City. Both his grandfathers were Revolutionary War heroes but his father, a merchant, died bankrupt in 1833. Melville left school and worked at various jobs before shipping on the whaler Achshnet in 1841. The next year he deserted, travelled the South Seas and joined the US Navy. After three years he retired, settled in Massachusetts and started to write. His first two novels, Typee (1846) andOmoo (1847), were fictionalized accounts of his travels: they remained his most popular works during his lifetime. In 1847 Melville married and wrote a series of novels he considered potboilers for money. With Moby-Dick (1851) he changed course, partly under the influence of Nathaniel Hawthorne; but the novel's extravagant intensity lost him readers. Pierre (1852) fared no better, and after publishing one more novel Melville took a job as a customs inspector in the New York City harbour and turned to writing poetry. He died there in 1891; an unfinished novel, Billy Budd, Sailor, was published in 1924.

I read Moby-Dick several times in college almost forty years ago. Now I'm taking a night class and reading it with life experience of forty years. Awe is the feeling that constantly gets evoked as I read. Why awe?Capacious. That is the word that repeats again and again in my head. Moby-Dick is a vibrantly colored hot air balloon that keeps growing in size as I read it. First, Melville's subject is the sperm whale, the largest creature on earth. But we don't just learn about the sperm whale but about all whales. Then we learn about whaling and its nobility. Here is where it gets very interesting. We participate in whaling, its skill, equipment, courage, risks and economy AND about how it results in the gruesome destruction of the whale. We feel the horror inflicted on the whales and we feel the nobility of the activity that slaughters them. Melville doesn't allow us to avert our eyes either to the daring of whaling or to the viciousness of the slaughter. That is where the book inflates even more because he holds both perspectives equally which is a much larger place than if he had taken sides. The book also foreshadows modernism by using a variety of narrative techniques; theater, pure narration, encyclopedic explanations and subjective interior monologues. Melville is constantly breaking up the narrative with omniscient recitations of fascinating information about his subject matter. And like Ulysses or the Waste Land, he piles on the reference to Shakespeare, the Greeks, Christianity and the Hebrew traditions. There are many references with regard to Ahab and the Whale regarding evil and Satan. Yet Ahab has great respect and reverence for Moby Dick. Ahab himself knows he is obsessed and but can have great compassion like his feelings for the lowly addled Pip. So yes there is evil afoot in the book but it isn't the kind that that creates simple polar opposites. As Ahab describes Moby-Dick (has) `an inscrutable malice sinewing through it' that describe the book as well. There is evil and there is also goodness that coexists in the book making the reader feel that he has to take sides. If the reader resists this temptation he or she will experience the awe of a deep and ever expanding mystery.

"Moby-Dick," the Third Norton Critical Edition edited by Hershel Parker, the foremost Melville scholar, is a leviathan of a Melvillean treat and brings Melville into the 21st century. Melville wrote in "White Jacket..." " the books that prove most agreeable, grateful and companionable are those we pick up by chance here and there... those that pretend to little, but bound by much." There is so much added to this superb third edition of "Moby-Dick," including the splendid portrait of Ahab on the cover by Oleg Dobrovolski. In the well-written preface, Hershel Parker clearly indicates how the different Norton editions published in 1967, 2001 and 2017 addresses the times and issues of their publication dates. Parker describes why Melville means so much more to us today then he did to his contemporaries and how our vision of Melville has changed from 1967 such as global warming, the extinction of species and human overpopulation. Parker mentioned that Chapter 105 "... Will He Perish?" of Moby-Dick" is read differently today. No longer do we believe as Melville did "we account the whale immortal in his species."Of course the book contains the authoritative text pioneered by Parker and Harrison Hayford. In this case with numerous added notes. Then Hershel Parker has written a new chapter, "Glimpses of a Melville as a Performer." This section clearly shows the talented Melville as a debater, actor, raconteur, lecturer and a master storyteller thru the eyes of his contemporaries. One of my favorite chapters that appears in all editions deals with whaling and whale craft with nautical terms and the well-illustrated whaling industry section. There is so much new and important material in this third edition. Highly recommended is reading the "Melville Revival 1879-1927."In conclusion it was exciting to read the new rich material in this third edition. Anyone interested in Melville, "Moby-Dick" or reading this classic piece of literature for the first time, needs to have this latest edition on his or her bookshelf. The essays at the end by some of the outstanding Melville scholars are an enriching experience. Walter Bezanson, Harrison Hayford, Greil Marcus, Timothy Marr, Mary K. Bercaw Edwards, Wyn Kelley, Robert K. Wallace, Jonathan Letham and Robert Payne takes us on a voyage and comprehensively bring "Moby-Dick" into the 21st century by addressing the present generation. They cover such "Moby-Dick" topics as the character of Ishmael; the reading and rereading of the book; the "Moby-Dick" in popular culture; the surprising proliferation of "Moby-Dick" public reading marathons; its influence in the arts and even a discussion of the song of whales. This is truly a "mighty book" on "Moby-Dick." When you read this volume, you will have a whale of a time!

I tried. I really tried. Multiple times. But the page after page describing all the different types of whales in the most minute of detail, and the sentences that stretch so long that by the end of them I'd realize I couldn't figure out for the life of me what point he was trying to make. I finally decided life is to short to torture myself with a book I'm just not enjoying, and I moved on. Maybe I'll try again in another 10 years.

A very enjoyable listen. Well narrated and takes a long time to get through, my two main requirements for an audiobook :). I tried reading this when I was young (luckily never given it as an assignment) and it is a tough read. Herman Melville was a master of the poetic phrase and it is beautiful to listen to but a trudge to read imho. A true American classic of the dangers of revenge and mob mentality. It also provides a time-machine like glimpse into the powerful American whaling industry and once again demonstrates the American concept (for good or bad) that whatever the world does we will outstrip it. I was especially pleased with the authors (narrators) view on the belief that mankind could never kill enough whales to endanger their numbers in the ocean and provides an interesting analogy separating their killing from the American Buffalo. Sadly, little did he know of where technology and seafaring were headed just a few decade later. I spent .99 for the kindle book and got the audio for free so I count it as money well spent.
